Normally I'd post this on HoF but that hasn't been going too well lately and I don't want to open up the recent wounds. Anyway, I'm in Round Rock, didn't really want a full meal and Hooters were doing "All you can eat Wings" on a Monday night.

So here's my dilemma. I just wanted a snack. Hooters had what I wanted. The girls are not indecent, but it's absolutely sexist. Also, most of these girls aren't much older than my daughter and I'd hate to see her doing this job. On the other hand, there's lots of jobs I'd hate to see her doing and these girls are just making a living. So, what do you guys think? Is a place like Hooters a sort of "legitimate" strip club for sad old geezers? The amount of families in here eating tonight would suggest not but I still feel somehow wrong, or sleazy, like I'm contributing to the exploitation of young women.

Thoughts?

If anyone is doing anything wrong, it's not the girls.

I've never been to, or near, hooters and I don't think there are any near here, so I don't know.

What is it about this job that makes you feel it would be inappropriate for your daughter?

Very short pants. Hot pants, actually, and tight T-shirts designed to emphasise the, well, "Hooters". Its a very sexualised uniform for a young girl/woman to be wearing, and the effect is obviously designed to be titillating.

I'm not a big fan of it. I've never quite understood why families eat there because it's obviously geared toward men. Heck, I'm not overly thrilled by a local restaurant called The Pub, which attempts to be an English pub. The women wear micro mini tartan skirts and tight blouses. The men wear full length kilts.

I'm not a prude, but if my female server can't bend over to pick something up off the floor without exposing herself, then I don't think that's quite right.

I'm sure someone could come in and defend all of this, but I'll just say that it concerns me.

Do the women who work there enjoy their job, or do they do it because it was all they could get?

No idea Jude, but I expect its a case of "better than some other jobs, but not ideal"? I mean, I can't imagine any kid grows up wanting to be a Hooters girl, but then not many people want to be sewage engineers either. Then again, at a certain age I guess it may be a badge of honour. As in "pretty enough to be a Hooters girl". I really don't know. That's why I found the whole thing a little disconcerting. I genuinely don't know if it's harmless or not.

I have to join the chorus of ambivalence, at least when it comes to adults eating there. I'm not crazy about the whole concept, but I've known young women who would think it's great that they can turn men on with that outfit. And I wouldn't disapprove of women getting a Chippendale calendar for themselves, either (no, not me. :) ), so I'd be a hypocrite to say absolutely that it's wrong.

What I do find bothersome is when Hooters advertises cheap childrens' meals. I think it's stupid to take your children there at an impressionable age - both boys and girls.

I actually ate there once with a woman friend, at a sidewalk table. We were in a hurry, it was the only place without a wait, and we had no clue what a Hooters was until the waitress came. When she did, we sort of shrugged, looked at each other, and ordered. It was that or spend the afternoon hungry. I have to say, the hamburger was very good. And the waitress was very nice to two strayed young women. She probably appreciated it that we had no interest in ogling her.

Hooters is weird. It's been trying to rebrand itself as a family restaurant, and is certainly less racy than the place I remember giggling about as a kid. It's currently trying to occupy a sort of unstable intermediate position in a country that's become fairly hostile toward the middle in all walks of life. I doubt it will be able to stay there; I suspect it will either have to go to full-family (with maybe just a hint of danger in the air) or go out of business.

Odd fact: I was in Vancouver about two years ago, and the waitresses in that city's ordinary restaurants wore uniforms that were at least as racy, and in some cases racier, than anything the Hooters staff wears.

If women want to work a job that gives bigger tips based on their appearance, that's their business. I don't mind... but I still won't go there. I'm profoundly uninterested in other people's mammary glands.

I've been in plenty of places I don't especially approve of that aren't doing actual harm. If this chain is fairly mainstream then perhaps its staff isn't treated too badly which is the only important thing. Were it me in the position you are in, I'd go and absolutely not leer. I've seen boobs before.
Cultures vary too. I took my son to a topless club when he was around 13!! The main thing that annoyed him was that none of his school friends believed him.

We had been taken by our French host families on a twinning trip to a Paris club. For the French, no big deal.

Hi Frelga. I've found my online life has been fractured but I still owe this messageboard my loyalty. I use Facebook but I do not admire it. But I'm fine and healthy and still leading an interesting life.

Wow. This was nearly 10 years ago. Hooters seems to have survived anyway. :)

Dunno if our non-american friends are aware, but there has been a recent swath of states that are passing legislation against things like allowing drag queens around minors because these people view it as "sexualizing" children. In response I have seen many people comment how these same conservatives sure aren't going after places like Hooters promoting itself as a family-friendly restaurant.

Or child beauty pageants that have very young girls dressed up in "sexy" outfits with lots of makeup.
