I don't think she was ever going to be involved with the creative side, beyond possibly having some input.

I'm not sure if the all-cap tweet indicates excitement or hints that Death will be involved.

So this is the Watch series that I asked about on the previous page? It's finally happening?

Yes, but it's all original writing with Pratchett's characters. It's described as a "punk rock thriller" so who knows.

And what about the Troll Bridge film, for which you posted a trailer earlier? It gave the impression of being near completion.

Last I heard, it was in post-production.

If you record books-on-tape, how do you deal with the following?
Pratchett, in Sourcery, wrote:
Rincewind blinked. There was a weird light. No, now he came to think about it, not weird but wyrd, which was much weirder.

I imagine something like "There was a weird light. No, now he came to think about it, not w-e-i-r-d but w-y-r-d, which was much weirder"

Doesn't work as well, but can't see any other way to impart it.

Yeah, or slightly shorter, "not weird but w-y-rd"

I guess it is well known that PTerry wrote to JRRT when he was a young journalist...for those who weren't aware, and haven't managed to see the Tolkien Exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum, here is a post about the letter, which although is not on display in the exhibit, is published in the accompanying book (Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth p102):

[ img ]
Quote:
An excerpt from the adjoining page:

When Tolkien was an old man he wrote a short story called Smith of Wootton Major. He described it as being ‘written with deep emotion, partly drawn from my own experience of the bereavement of “retirement”, and of advancing age.’ The first fan letter he received in response to this work came from a young Terry Pratchett, who was already making a living from writing as a journalist on a local newspaper, The Bucks Free Press. Although only nineteen years old, Pratchett grasped the depth of feeling in the book and also the sense of bereavement that lay behind it. He wrote to Tolkien, ‘An odd feeling of grief overcame me as I read it.’ As with most of his fan mail Tolkien wrote a personal reply: ‘You evidently feel about the story very much as I do myself. I can hardly say more.’

Thanks for posting that - I hadn't actually read the text of the letter before.

It's interesting that people were awaiting The Silmarillion as early as 1967. Now I wish even more that Tolkien had come up with a final definitive version of it before he died.

That's interesting, nienna. Smith of Wootton Major has always been one of my favorite Tolkien short stories. There's a sense of loss to it, though I can't say it ever made me feel grief, but it's a beautiful story too.

New book expected in September: "The Time-Travelling Caveman"

I dunno, they may be scraping the bottom of the barrel of unpublished bits and bobs they found lying around.

But that's not gonna stop me from snapping it up the moment it becomes available

So at the top of this page, we were talking about the Watch series just about to happen. Those posts were in 2018.

Did it already happen and we missed it?

Yeah, the trailer just came out. But it's only very vaguely inspired by Pratchett. His estate emphatically said they had nothing to do with it.

Did you know that the Battle of Cable Street was based on a real Battle of Cable Street? I didn't until now.

And it looks like we had a narrow escape. Britain could easily have gone the way of Germany in the Second World War.

It's one of those things that when you mentioned it, I felt like I knew it.

So did anyone watch The Watch?

It's on BBC America. They've been running ads for it here.

Reviews have not been kind. Well, inasmuch as its not Pratchett. If you ignore that its meant to be Pratchett apparently its ok.
