I had a really, really long first post, but I'm so pissed off at its disappearance that I'm just going to write:

...............................................................................WHITE TEETH.

Two years ago, on a school trip, my English teacher was reading this. And then of the the guys decided *he* wanted to read it, so he made her read it out loud to him. :P

And it sounded really good!

So I read it, and I don't remember much, but I remember really liking it. The characters were just so. . . weird, but in a normal sort of way, if you know what I mean.

You should read it again! I reckon it gets better every time. :D

I know what you mean about the characters. They're just trying to respond normally to the world around them... I do love Irie's solution to Millat's turning to religion... And Joshua Chalfen, when he leaves home... :damnfunny I live right by Glastonbury, you know. "Oh, he's gone down to Glastonbury with some friends..." "Marcus, pull yourself together! The festival was three months ago!" And Archie, just sitting there in the middle of these little wars. "I'd like to go and sit on a hill on my own..." or something, wasn't it? Everyone thought he was mad, but he'd only said it because of a letter he'd had from Horst Ibelgaufts. :D

I can't believe how much of this I can still remember! I lent the book to a woman at the hotel where I work, and she's taking ages (well it is her second language). ;)

I'd really like to!

I have to admit, I just bought 17 books at a library booksale, so I've got a looong list right now, but I remember really enjoying it.

I completely forgot about Joshua Chalfen, and Millat the Extremeist! Good stuff. . . I especially the butcher telling Archie that, no, he couldn't commit suicide there because the delivery truck to park there, and it wasn't kosher! :LMAO:

You know, I really am going to have to read this agian. Thanks for reminding me. :)

"Abba, there is a man round the back..."
"Ask him what he is doing there."
"He says he is gassing himself, Abba."

[...]

"I'm sorry, this is kosher mate. Halal. You want to die round here, you have to be thoroughly bled first!"

:D

I remember that bit from the TV version. :D I think it was the great Om Puri playing the slaughterman.

You should hear it on the tape... I can't remember the name of the reader, but it's an English man and he does all the accents and even the singing... he goes from calm English narration to the ancient Hortense bellowing "He who would valiant be" in her thick Jamaican accent. :D
