Yeah, but each book has a complete story arc (if that's the right word). A plot that resolves by the end of the book.
I read a freebie Kindle book from Amazon the other day that just stopped. In the middle.
With only one minor plot point resolved.
And then you were expected to pay $4.99 for the "next" book.
That was a completely dishonest marketing ploy. I refused to get the next book purely on principle. Well, also the writng was a bit clutsy.....
IIRC Butcher's first book was written as an exercise in formula writing and the sequels pretty much follow the same formula. I, personally, happen to really like that format so it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I haven't been able to get into his other series at all.
Yes, you should read them in order-- but no, each book is a separate entity. The only reason I chaff at the delay between book is because they are so darn GOOD! I can't wait to see what happens next!
