I checked it out from the library and have been reading it all week....and I must say it is kind of exhausting reading it. While it's cool to hear about some behind the scenes stuff about Lord of the Rings films, Sean rambles alot about other films he did. I can tell he's using this book to tell his whoooole story.

I also find it irritating to listen to him ramble on egotistically all the time....I guess I can relate to him.:P...but he's really obssessive/compulsive it seems like.

Anyone read it?

I agree.

And is it my imagination or does he wander away from a subject and start talking about another?

I quite enjoyed reading it, but it strikes me as very self indulgent.

I read this when it first came out and was fairly disappointed with it. I remember Dustin Hoffman talking about working with Sir Larry Oliver on MARTHON MAN and how they each attempted to steal scenes from each other. Neither blamed the other because they both subscribe to the LOOK AT ME school of acting.

And it seems so does Sean Astin.

The books seemed to be one whine after another about how nobody gave him respect or big scenes or just plain deferred to him. The stuff about wanting to be treated as a fellow film maker by Peter Jackson was just silly.

He does seem like a genuinely nice fellow - but more than a bit of a whiny sob sister as well.

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs. - John Rogers

I don't think he comes across as egotistical. Self indulgent seems a far more appropriate description.

The autobiographical act itself is the supreme self indulgence. :)

And Astin takes that mandate to heart.

He really came across as a complete muppet. It was only slightly less cringeworthy than his attempt to make political Union speeches at LotR awards ceremonies. Thank God John Rhys Davies dragged him off the podium.

I don't see myself reading it again, which is unfortunate as I bought the hardback.

I've decided not to read this book since I've heard so many negative things about the way Sean Astin comes across. I think I'll just preserve my image of him as Samwise. I'm not that interested in him as a person, and the DVDs provide plenty of behind-the-scenes info. A real "making of" book would have been nice though.
