Oh my lord, Sharky. :Q

That last one looks like a Pac-Man ghost eating the torso of a wrinkly old man.

Bilbo looks like he's dressed in his pyjamas and nightcap!

Eru, my first thought was "hey, it's one of the characters from those childrens' Christmas books who wake up to discover Santa in their living room or something". :P

And while I'm at it...

You can find more crazy Hobbit illustrations here.

Edit I: This Gollum was actually quite good! :Q

Edit II: What is that? :suspicious:

Nienor, bless you! I've been looking for these imagesall over the net. I'm so glad you posted that link!

This is from one of the first Russian editions of the Hobbit, where Bilbo Baggins is based on the appearance of the famous actor Evgeny Leonov. They did go overboard with the leg hairiness, IMO, but I can see how illustrator would be misled by the translation.

ETA: Eruname, your link didn't work for me.

Were you talking to me Frelga? Don't know what's up since the link works for me. Try pasting it into your browser. Though if you've seen the cartoon Hobbit, you know how awful Gollum is. ;)

Sorry, Eru, I was indeed talking to you. Don't know why I stopped midname.

You are right, copying and pasting the link works. I've seen that behavior before with hotlinks. And that Gollum is sort of cute - not a desirable quality in a Gollum. :D

I do love the Rankin/Bass Hobbit version. :) Obviously a lot of it is silly, but then it's for kids. I would totally introduce my children to Tolkien through something like that.

My high school friends said this Gollum was terrifying. I'm not sure if I think he's cute, but I guess he can be different things to different people. The frog likeness doesn't really work for me.

It really bored me. The music was horrendous too. I think it's a good introduction for kids though.

I really didn't like how Gollum just muttered "gollum". I like the was Serkis did it...as a cough.

Yeah. Frog. I think this frog also is supposed to be Gollum.

As if 500 years with the Ring wasn't enough suffering! :Q

Clearly drawn by someone who didn't read LOTR and has no idea that Gollum is supposed to be a hobbit.

Yeah - but still!

Also, I notice that Tolkien describes him as a small, slimy creature.

Small?

Big!

Big!

Big!

I mean; if Bilbo is somewhere between 1,00 and 1,20 m, those Gollums would be like 3-4 metres tall! :Q

Edit: Elrond sure has pretty legs...

Crazy foreign artists! These are hideous pictures. :D

"Elrond" looks like a cross between the subject of Renaissance art, and an ALICE IN WONDERLAND character.

Yes, my 7 year old daughter can watch the entire 3 film series without batting an eye, yet she made me turn off the Rankin/Bass hobbit thingie because Gollum was so scary. Go figure.

Yeah, the rolozo art gallery … those slanted eyes are so slanted they're almost vertical. And the elven porcupines in the trees … no comment.

Beren/Luthien: who'd not be dumbstruck when stumbling upon this in an otherwise unsuspicious forest clearing? It's so weird, it's close to the Brothers Gentile spoof.

Nienor S-A, I actually own an abridged (minus some of the pics) version of the German "Hobbit" with exactly these pics: they're coloured in original (but reproduced in s/w inside, so much of the depth and brightness has gone nuddinks) and I find them quite good, specially the very Rennaissance Elves. It is unusual to see them in the trees, too, but hey, the book says it was an unusual sight.
