Naurwen was alone. The moon had risen and the silver light bathed the countless scrolls and books that filled row upon row of shelves. This library had been built, by Noldor hands, in the image of that in Garth-en-Aglon in Himlad, with large windows and balconies facing the mountains, and stone pillars hewn like trees, their long branches entwining along the ceiling.
Many times she had stood there, the book forgotten between her hands, gazing at the sun setting behind the mountains, tingeing the snow-capped peaks with golds and reds. Then twilight had come, and as the stars shone outside, so did the crystals set among the stone branches, and the library delven in the mountain became a night garden.
But this was not the same library, for the one she so vividly remembered now lay under water, in the far north. It was but an attempt to keep alive those memories they all treasured.
They called it I Gar nia-Laim, The House of Languages, for most texts devoted to such subject had been removed from the main library, where books were beginning to pile up, and brought here.
It was in this chamber where she spent long hours when dwelling in Mithlond, so did those who had once known the mountain fortress of Celegorm and Curufin, and had not yet passed into the West. And those who wished to acquire language lore, or were in need of translations came here too, for some Elves here spoke Quenya and Adûnaic as well as Sindarin.
‘“Trenarn ‘obennathren o Laim Edhellin”… “Dangweth PengoloÞ” … ”Markirya”…’ Her fingers caressed the books on the shelves as she looked for one to help her wait for the morning. As many Noldor, she could lose track of time when it came to lámatyávë, for the pleasure she found in words and sounds was great...

Sorry. I just couldn't help it  All this RP is starting affect me :D
Now seriously, I've been suggested to start a thread about languages and translations in order to give those who request it, a hand with translations into Sindarin.
I can find my way around Quenya and Adûnaic grammar, so if any of you needs translations involving these languages I can definitely give it a try, as long as you're not in a hurry

I work on being able to say the same for me too.

Welcome, Breogàn. Would you be able to teach Sindarin too?

Cool to see this being launched. I've been very curious to Sindarin and Aglnaor (the RP character) can definitely benefit from whatever I may learn here...;)

To start off with something that's been playing in my mind awhile.

Like the glittering sun I will radiate light and warmth to all around me.

It's kind of a poke to my nick name. I thought of this for a tattoo, of course in runes if I'll ever choose it...:)

Aglanor,
As it often happens with Sindarin due to its reduced lexicon, we need to play a lil' bit with words to convey the same meaning. As you can imagine, there are no attested words in Sindarin for "around" or "radiate"

*Like the glittering sun I will radiate light and warmth to all around me.
_Sui Anor hílol peliathon galad ah ûr an ngwaith phâin an nin_
(Like a shining Sun, I will spread light and heat to all the people by me)

_Sui Anor hílol peliathon galad ah ûr an ngwaith nín bain_
("Like a shining Sun I will spread light and heat to all my people")

There is a verb which is usually listed as a synonym of "glitter", which is "glister/glisten". IMO, it would be quite incorrect to use it here, for etymologically speaking, it refers to the shining or sparkling of wet surfaces or jewels/metals. Therefore I used _síla_ "to shine". But just in case, if you prefer this otehr verb, the translations would be:
_Sui Anor thiliol peliathon galad ah ûr an ngwaith phâin an nin_
_Sui Anor thiliol peliathon galad ah ûr an ngwaith nín bain_

My students often ask me to tell them something in Elvish...

But all I would want to tell them would be: Work now!

It sounds too profanic to be used in Elvish, though.

Just in case, here you have both options since you didnt specify which Elven tongue:

Sindarin: _Mudo hi!_ (lit. "labour now")
Quenya: _Á móta sí !_ (Lit. "labour now")

If you´re not sure about the pronunciation, let me now and I'll post a summary. :D

Aglanor,

Here you have, transcribed using the Angerthas Daeron Mode from Beleriand, 1st. Age (although for clarity I've used Cirth Erebor, a more stylish font)
Any doubt, or whatever, give me a shout :)

***sw000000000ns for Breogán***

You're so awesome!!!

I know I wouldn't mind learning about Elvish languages. I downloaded the Quenya course from Ardalambion, but haven't been able to make myself go through it.

Eru

You just swooned for me?! Cheers!

I know the feeling, (although it has never happened to me with languages)...
Helge's course is very good, but if I were to take a course on Quenya, I would combine his with Thors'. :)

As previuosly posted, teh idea is to help you out with translations. But if any of you needs a hand studying one of Tolkien's languages, I'll be delighted to help. (Don't tell anyone, but languages are my secret vice )

Mine too, Breagàn, although I don't speak half as many as I would like to.

Thank you for the translations for my students! They just say elvish, I doubt they know the difference between quenya and sindarin  . But once they know German, I'll get them there...

I was sent this very pretty Christmas card by Melthavron last night. But whilst I can appreciate the beauty of the script, I can't understand a flippin' squiggle of tengwar. Or at least, not without a lot of time spent unravelling it.

Is there any chance you would translate for me Breogán? :)

It reads

Pedir den i Eru minnatha na Arda a nestatha Edain a hastad ban o heriad na vethed.

This is what it says literally:

They say that Eru will enter the World and will heal the Men and the hacking through all from sudden beginning to end

Did Melthavron himself made the card ?

I have no idea, but thank you very much for the translation. I'll ask him next time I send mail his way.

Bre: since you're bored [ img ] could you perhaps come up with an attempt at Aduniac translation for the months of the year (list) and something along the lines of ....

e.g. On this day, [insert number day] of [insert name of month] in the year [insert number] it transpired .....

Not for me directly :halo: but we'll be needing something like that for ship log entries

edit: actually - can I be a real pain in the backside? :halo:
You know how nice it would be to have a list that goes something like that....

January ........... Narvinyë (q) / Narwain (s) .... Aduniac etc.
February ......... Nenimë (q) / Ninui (s)
..
...
:halo:
Kings reckoning = derived from Numenor also New Reckogning FA based on this
Annual Eldarin cycle 365 days, commencing at Yule (mid-winter), new reckogning starts in spring
12 months (astar, ten of 30days, two of 31 days) / 7 day week, span of days sunrise-sunrise (elves sunset-sunset)
Dunedain used Sindarin names, other Westron speakers used the Quenya version

from my humble notes
