I have a friend named Josh who is sitting next to me asking me what Narsil/Anduril was made of and I can't tell him because I DON'T KNOW! *sob* :bawl: I tried the Thain's Book and everything. :( I was wondering if any of you guys had an idea? I thought it might be mithril, since that seems to be what the best blades were made from, but I can't find confirmation of that anywhere. Thoughts?

Pips, my understanding is that swords were generally made of iron. I've never heard of sword made from mithril. The only swords that I think of in which the substance they are made from is specified is Turin's sword Gurthang ("Iron of Death"), which was originally called Anglachel, and it mate Anguirel, both of which were original forged by the dark elf Eöl from iron that had fallen from space. Anglachel was given to Thingol by Eöl as a feel allowing Eöl to live in his dark forest outside the girdle of Melian, and then given by Thingol to Beleg to use as he searched for Turin, and used by Turin to tragically kill Beleg.

Hm, I wonder where I got the idea Sting was made from mithril from? I remember thinking it seemed a bit retarded to make a weapon from mithril, which is a variant of a malleable material. :scratch

Oh well, thanks both of you. :)

Sting is not metal.

He started off reggae, then moved to a more jazz-type field.

Actually it was more ska than reggae.
And Sting has kind of lost his edge over the years. Not nearly as keen as he once was.
He still truns blue when he doesn't get his way though.

Tolkien never much alluded to the materials that weaponry was made, excepting the one which V pointed out. He dealth more with the enchantments or spells that was laid on them.

One must presume Anduril was made of steel but Tolkien was a little hazy on metallurgy. The shards could be drawn out under heat and hammering and recombined but not stuck together like a jigsaw in the way the film suggested. I would suggest the Anglo Saxon pattern welding of twisted strips would be more likely than the Japanese technique of wrapping steel round a soft core.
In Fog on the Barrow-Downs the swords given to the hobbits were wrought of some strange metal, light and strong, and untouched by rust. They were also damasked with serpent forms in red and gold. I don't think this bears too much close examination.

Can't blame Tolkien for that, can we?

Depends on how hot they managed to get the furnace.

Steel is basically carbonized iron, and it can be made by heating and melting iron in temperatures of 1130°C (2066°F). As the Chinese could achieve this in 500BC, I would certainly assume that the swords of Numenorean nobles would be made of steel.

By the way, any attempt to forge the shards together as depicted in the film (hammering them with huge, wild blows while they're cherry-red) would have resulted in a mess.
