I couldn't think of a name to use for Friends of English Magic -- the only character I would have chosen was Childermass but it annoys me when girls use the names of male characters. I really liked the all of the fairy colours though and Colour of Heartache was the most succint and also it seemed like my sort of colour.

ETA: I just realised how that sounded. I meant I like colours with a sort of grey tinge and also I almost always prefer stories and things that are more tragical. No emo-ness here, no sir!

Did you get through Children of Húrin yet? :poke:

I finished it. Really nothing new that wasn't in the UT version. Still, the artwork is lovely. :)

It's been awhile since I read this book so no detailed musings on it from me. But I will say I did enjoy it. :)

Just starting it now. Its been sitting on my Bookshelf since before pretty much anyone was talking about it. It was one of those impulse buys. Just looked interesting so I bought it. Since then I've heard a lot of good things, so looking forward to it.

Just to warn you AL, it may take you a while to get into it. Stick with it...

It does move a little slowly at the beginning, but then it definitely speeds up. :D

We tried this one on audio book, and gave up after a while. It just didn't grab our attention. From the look of this thread, though, perhaps I should have stuck with it a bit longer. I'll have to check out the print version some time.

I haven't heard the audio, but I imagine it's for long journeys... (Like, East to West coast on your lonesome type things.)

It's definitely got a slow start, but once Norrell hits London the action really hots up.

Um - not quite yet  I went to two rummage sales recently and came away with a huge pile of books I need to read first.

Glad to hear your five-star recommendation - I look forward to reading it probably sometime in the spring!

Fair enough. I look forward to discussing with you after we've both read it. :)

I just picked up The Ladies of Grace Adieu today to read on the plane - a year later than I said I would!

I may have some things to say about it when I get back...

 Oops, I forgot to post about it

It was very good - a collection of short stories rather than a novel. One of them actually has Jonathan Strange himself making an appearance. Another is set in the Village of Wall as created by Neil Gaiman in Stardust (due credit is given in the introduction).

The concept is the same - magical stories set in Regency England. People who loved Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell should enjoy this book as well. In fact, those who found the novel hard going might enjoy the short stories more.

Sounds interesting. :) Thanks! I'll have to check it out. I like short stories. :)

I'm in the middle of reading this and liking it just fine, but I have to wonder; what on Earth would ever possess someone to write this particular book?
