Has anyone else read this?

I couldn't put this novel down!

I went into it with no preconceptions at all: I'm not a massive fantasy novel fan (not compared to Din and most of you guys anyway), often finding them a little lacking in literary style and character development. So I did no book-shop selection routine - this book was just handed to be by my beloved, with instructions to read it!

It was everything a good fantasy romp ought to be. :D I adored the characters (Locke is definitely worthy of a little crush - just enough weakness to make him engaging - trust me, fancying the male lead is important in a book), the plot twists, the pace, the use of flashbacks to the past. It was everything a roleplay crossed with a novel ought to be - it makes me want to get my dice out but above all makes me want to read more of this.

Fortunately, the second book is sitting on the bedside cabinet awaiting my tender ministrations.

Sounds more like a Historic Romance than a fantasy novel! Details?

No, it's not romance at all! Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

It's about a gang of thieves and con artists, who work very hard to push their creative and risk-taking limits and cream a fortune from the nobilty of this particular city state. All well and good, with an element of risk. But the gang is not the only gang in the city; they're all beholden to one leader, who is being challenged for his position. And suddenly, their little criminal lives become drawn into raging gang warfare and political game playing.

It's fantasy because the setting is a made up world. There's not too much overt magic but there are bonds-mages and alchemists a-plenty and a few fantastical animals (super-sharks and some spider things), but never so much as to overshadow the plot or the character development. It's all interwoven with flashbacks to the gang's youth, showing how they developed their skills, how they bonded and feeding little tit bits to bring the whole story together.

It is. And Din tells me that the second book is even better. You should give it a go!

Excellent book, probably one of the more unique fantasies I've ever read.

Just finished Lies of Locke Lamora, and then headed out and bought Red Seas Under Red Skies. :D

This one has been on the bookshelf for about two months, and I just this week started reading it. So far, I like it!
