I'm surprised no one else started a thread on this.

What's your take?

And incase you hadn't heard about this, here's the article:
Dumbledore's uh, sexual preference

Changes nothing, so hardly a big deal. His actions made him, not his choice of lovers. Fictionally of course.

Wow, Alatar, you jumped on this post! :D

I was shocked, but you're right, it changes nothing. Didn't bother me, I was just surprised.

Heh, just seems an unnecessary label by JKR really far as I can see.

What does it really do to the books or the story?

Nowt.

But... I daresay there is a new avenue for the HP slash fic now...

After all its CANON now baby. :D

Well, Rowling says that one of the reasons why Dumbledore looked through his fingers at Grindelwald's use of dark magic, was because he was in love with him. That is important. That explains something significant.

But she should have told us.

Told us in the book, not in some comment afterwards. Say it. It explains something. Not that we need a chapter called "Dumbledore's Closet" og anything (:LMAO:), but perhaps he could have said, "I loved him", or just something hinting at what was going on. Love can make you blind. Even if you're Albus Dumbledore.

Other than that irritation, I think it's quite cool that Dumbledore's gay. Suits his character. No wonder he always protected those who were different? But that makes me wonder, by the way, how the attitude towards homosexuality is in the wizard world.

Not as if they never see stranger things.

But it makes me sad that Dumbledore, in that respect, had a lonely life. :(

I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map, And knew that somehow I could find my way back; Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too - So I stayed in the darkness with you

I'm not a huge fan of old man slash but I know this avenue has already been tapped long before the coming out of Dumbledore. Just sayin' :D

That's only rule 34? I thought it was rule one!

Isn't like 97% of the internet porn related?

I have no issue with it, I think its kind of neat and it fits with the hints we got about Grindewald (made me go hmmm when I read it), although Dumbledore was in the "old, wise and vernerable" category for me which didnt lend him to much speculation about his sexual life (unlike some other characters  ) ... but it is kinda strange to have character revelations long after the book is written. I almost think Albus could be a little indignant at being outed like this lol... I dont think everything has to be spelled out, and including "he is gay" or "he loved him" just for the sake of making a definitive statement wasn't entirely necessary... but if so, is it necessary after the books are done? Its just kinda a weird mode. Now if every author starts doing that, it would change the way people perceive books and characters.

In "online criticism" I read that people thought the revelation made sense since Dumbledore was never portrayed to have close relations with the other sex... I don't really buy that argument because most of the old generation Hogwarts teachers weren't portrayed as having any type of romantic relations with the opposite sex. McGonagal, Flitwick, Trelawny, etc. I dont see any hints of orientation discussed or any incidents of what could be considered romantic interaction hinted at.

Anyhow, what is it with gay wizards eh? Dumbledore, Sir Ian as Gandalf :P ;)

I have always wondered at that...

In fact, it would seem that most ministry wizards unmarried too... Fudge, Scrimgeour, Kingsley etc. The only ones we know of who are married are the Weasleys and that guy who Ron (or is it Harry) pretends to be in the ministry.

Well, Crouch was married (or widowed, to be exact), and he worked in the Ministry. Also, I may be wrong, but I think that, Mrs Fudge is briefly mentioned somewhere in the books.

As for Dumbledore -- so what?

To be honest, now that she's made millions and the main wave of Book 7 sales have happened, Rowling probably did this deliberately to piss off the Christian Right - the people who said her books were evil and shouldn't be read.

But in the script of film 6, when it was being scripted, there was a reference to a woman Dumbeldore loved, and Jo Ro scribbled Dumbledore is Gay on it. Before the 7th book (and Dumbledore) came out...
