I'd like to join, too, Ethel.
Some parts of the Sil are my most favourite things Tolkien ever wrote.

Are we allowed to give cross-references to HOME and UT?

I missed the TORC group read for Dune, and have been wanting to re-read it. And I want to go back to Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy too. Maybe once we get done with the Sil... :)
I'd be up for all of those too!
And me. HDM would be fab to discuss in depth, especially in an open enviroment ;)

Honey, you're allowed to do anything you want, up to and including posting nekkid! ;) The only thing I ask is that people don't get (too far) ahead of the schedule so we can keep the discussions more or less in sync.

I actually think there is great value in bringing in additional Tolkien writings - UT, HOME, the letters - whatever applies.

So glad to see you again, Anneri. Missed you! :)

Awwww, Ethel. Missed you too.

As to the posting nekkid... nope, not telling. :P

I was just asking because in the thread in m00bies on Torc (IIRC) they wanted only to concentrate on the Sil - without cross-references. I can totally understand that, but IMO in a perfect world (without time and money restraints) the Sil should be as long as LOTR. And it irks me with no end that the book presents the reader with wonderful, tantalising vistas, behind which countless details remain hidden and can only be unearthed in HOME oder UT.
So I'm happy that we can draw comparisons and give wonderful, long quotations and speak about intertextuality. (Apparently I do really miss academia...)

I'll probably be lurking and posting occasionally. I'm an active participant in the Moobies Sil discussion. :cheers

A bit very late  But I sure would love to give this a go. I've toiled through the Sil a few times.... and still come away with less than the bare minimum.

And I'm very  to see so many interested, especially Impenitent despite the fact that that you've already done so much in the VTSG - which I occasionally glanced and and which had me go :Q (in awe)
Not sure how much I'll be able to contribute to high-level discussions Language is sometimes a barrier in expressing myself eloquently - but I shall try.

And if you start HDM - Please give me a yell. I've heard so much about this book (books?) I'd love to give it a go, especially with a great bunch like you guys. A quick trip to the bookstore is in order very soon.

I would be in for HDM too - but I only have it in French... and found especially the last book hard to read in French already. I don't know if I could give it a try in English.

My self-confidence has its limits.

I'll start a thread for HDM when we're nearly over with the Sil, so that we can keep the momentum. :)

I quite agree. I'm a (fairly) active participant on the m00bies Sil thread and I can't tell you how many times Voronwe has answered my questions with the now standard reply that it would entail delving into non-Sil materials .... either that or he could tell me but then he'd have to kill me!

I'm kidding, V. :D

So I'm really glad that we shall be able to reference Tolkien's other writings.

Btw, Ethel ... will there be any objection is we copy/paste from the m00bie thread? Especially when covering the same ground and wanting to make similar points?

Not the least objection! I haven't read through the Movies Sil thread, because I didn't notice it until it was so far underway. Knowing the dramatis personae, I'm sure there's some great stuff in it. :)

I would love to participate, at least as much as I can. I find it to be a facinating read, although it is always slow going. I am currently finishing up my third reading.

*shudder*

I Hated the HDM...we'll have to get the Dune one up at the same time.

Would it be possible to put the weekly page counts in the title of the thread?

Yes, but... since we will likely be reading different editions (not to mention languages!) of the book, wouldn't it make more sense to put chapters there - for instance:

Sil group read - first discussion - through Quenta Silmarillion chapter 3

or some such?

Good idea, Ethel. I got about halfway through and then had to stop because of school work, so I wouldn't mind restarting and having the extra motivation to finish it.

Yes I would too. I've learned the more times I read the Sil, the more I get out of it and the more I enjoy it. I'm getting close to keeping the F elves straight which is a miracle!!!!!

Rebecca, I just saw your sig pic here in this thread and I thought that was Marty sitting next to you. I'm just so used to thinking of you as being 'with Marty.' And I said to myself, "Gosh, Marty looks a lot like Elija Wood!"

LOL. I always referred to them "all those F-ing elves", you need a pocket note card to keep them straight.
