Can I humbly suggest that we break up into two sections as follows:
1. Ainulindale and Valaquenta
2. Quenta Silmarillion up to "Of the Coming of the Elves"

Just a suggestion.
Sure. I was just guessing with the schedule. Totally flexible here. Let's stay with Ainulindale and Valaquenta until we feel like it's time to move on.

Ack, I managed to miss this until now! :Q

I just love the idea of getting some Tolkien in here! :D

Imp, yes the VTSG was a great communal effort! (Thanks for remembering me! I loved taking part in the first chapters, but then lost track because I wasn't so fond of large parts of the Quenta - I'd love to try again here! :D )
You did a lot of work organising stuff though, and arranging summaries and all - it would never have been a success without you sticking to it! :)

But, yes, it was very like Frodo's kitchen (only more difficult in the sense that it was about a wider range of texts, where the kitchen concentrated on LOTR only) - in that you discussed a topic, each poster taking up things the previous one had said and adding things, so that in the end you came to a conclusion for yourself without knowing how. You never clearly remembered who had said what - just that everybody's contributions had helped form the final result. The VTSG was just like that, and if that happens it's just brilliant - an awesome feeling of group achievement! :)

So - have I missed my favourite part of the Sil - the Ainulindale? :(
I quickly read through the first pages of this thread, but thought I'd post a hello first before catching up on the actual discussion. :)
Do you start the Quenta this week already? (Because I'd have to read up on that and don't know if I have the time.)

(Yikes I just realised you had planned to start the Quenta in the first section - and then 50 pages a week! :Q I hope it'll be a bit slower than that. ;) )

Nope, we're still on Ainulindale and Valaquenta. I had first posted a more "ambitious" schedule, but it became clear that the group wanted to go a little slower. Also, I was away all of last week. So let's stay with the current topic for another week and then move on to the first 3 chapters of the Quenta Silmarillion. I'll update the schedule. :)

Jump on in, and welcome!

Okay. I did the split. I hope it's right! (we need a nervous smiley!)

I've renamed this thread as the OOC Ethel, just so it wasn't named the exact same thing as the other thread and of course you can change the title to whatever you deem appropriate. :)

Hi, I'm ready to jump in here! I have FINALLY found my copy of the Sil, and have read the first three chapters. Actually, tonight, I started on the making of the Dwarves, so I'm not only caught up, I'm ahead (for a change!)

EDIT: ....or not! :(

See you in the discussion thread, once I've managed to get caught up! :D

Yeah! :D

Sun, we are just about to move on the very short chapter Of Thingol and Melian. But if you want to comment on anything that has come before that, please feel free.

I'm really happy to hear that you want to join in the discussion, and I hope that others will too. :)
