I wouldn't have avoided it either. If L. M. Montgomery wrote it, I want to read it.

I need to reread all of these. I didn't get the hardcovers for Christmas (unless Freddy's mom got them for me--still haven't celebrated Christmas with her yet). This means they will be on my list for a while.

Hmmm, Now I will have to go check my mom's hardcover set (since those were the books I read) and see if they were abridged. I did read them all (minus the new one listed in the title) though it was years ago.

I got a new set of paperbacks, and my mother-in-law said she couldn't get hardbacks of them from anywhere. :( This bums me out.

What about the hardcover edition of Rilla of Ingleside that I linked to earlier? (this one)

Yeah, I can see that there are hardcovers out there, so I don't know. Maybe it's that I don't see a complete set sold together that way.

Ah well, I'll start looking for them on my own and get them a bit at a time.

ABE books!!! You cannot beat ABE books, believe me. I have had perfect satisfaction.

Just go there and buy books!!!!!!

http://www.abebooks.com/

I just went there and ordered 2 books: Jon Krakauer's "Under the Banner of Heaven" and Jane Grigson's "Good Things" which is a very famous book about food and cooking.

I order often. The books are cheap and it's like Christmas getting the parcels in the mail. I don't have time to mooch around bookstores and ABE has EVERYTHING I've ever wanted. I've never been let down.

I'm intrigued by this passage from "Penelope struts her theories":
Quote:
"Did you hear how they eneded up that bee-i-ee-iee song?" demanded Marta. "They didn't end it with 'way down yonder in the field'. What if Mrs. Raynor had heard them?"
What song is she referring to, and what is the alternate ending? Now I must know.

Off the top of my head, I don't know.

What about this?

(No, don't think that's it.)

Which book is this from?

It's one of the stories in The Blythes are quoted - you know, that one about the woman who had studied all those books on raising children and was convinced that she knew more about it than mothers who had actually done it? :D

Well, I finished the book, and I guess I liked it a lot more than the previous two reviewers. The criticisms were valid - all too often, the Blythes are mentioned out of the blue in a way that seems unnatural and forced. There's a reason for this - according to the guy that wrote the afterword, some of these stories were previously published in periodicals, and that Montgomery reworked them for the present collection by sticking a few references to the Blythes here and there. This would have been easy to fix, if only she had stayed alive long enough to work with an editor.

Maybe it's just as well I read vison's and Lali's reviews before tackling this book, since I was prepared for the Blythe-fixation, and it didn't bother me so much. And in fact this isn't a problem at all in those stories where the Blythes actually appear as minor characters; it's just when they're referred to in conversation that it comes across as a non-sequitur.

Best example:
Quote:
It was the one source of difference between him and Clara that she wanted him to wear pyjamas and he was determined that he would never wear anything but nightshirts.

"Dr. Blythe wears pyjamas," Clara would say mournfully.
How on earth would she know that? :LMAO:

In between the stories, we have vignettes of Anne reading some of her & Walter's poems to the family, and their reactions to them. These actually were my favourite parts of the book - they were actually about Anne and her family, rather than having them foisted unwillingly into an unrelated plot.

Yes, I liked the poems and vignettes with Anne and her family as well.

I was not fond of Montgomery's poems, but they were better than the stories, I agree.

A couple of the stories were nice, but many of them appeared in slightly different forms in other Anne books.

So what is "Chronicles of Avonlea" like? Now that I've gone through the entire saga, I've developed a taste for her writing.

It's been a long time since I've read it, so I don't remember clearly. It was probably similar to The Blythes are Quoted but better (better written, better editing).

It's nothing like The Blythes are Quoted. Anne is a central part of most of the stories and it's really quite lovely.

Here's an interesting article about a lost silent film of Anne of Green Gables from 1920. It contains a video with some stills from the movie.

Apparently it deviated from the book so drastically that Montgomery herself was scandalized. (one of the stills is of Anne fending off a hostile crowd with a rifle! :Q )

Interesting!

I would like to see a gallery of all of the still photos.

I saw a very old Anne movie on tv once, but it wasn't that old. It starred an actress named . . . . Anne Shirley! And she was blonde!!!

Man, and I thought PJ changed stuff. :Q
