Got to see George R R Martin at a convention this weekend, showing clips of his miniseiries (which I hadn't seen due to lack of HBO), and discussing some of the details that went into each scene. Like having the wolf not shown in one scene, because every take, she licked the actresses hands instead of growling and pulling back her lips like she was supposed to do.

Meanwhile, I'm slogging thru the end of the latest book and am not happy about the focus on war details rather than plot development or character arc.

There is sooooo much waffle in these books - they could be easily trimmed down by a large amount! But I'm enjoying them, and I want MOAR.

We listened to the LOOOOOONG audiobook versions. We still haven't made it through the latest book yet. The reader isn't very good, which-- combined with the meandering storyline-- massively reduces our incentive to get back to it.

I get lost reading it, I can't imagine how complicated it would be to follow on audiobook! :Q

I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map, And knew that somehow I could find my way back; Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too - So I stayed in the darkness with you

How many hours is that Maria?!

Still haven't picked up Dance with Dragons yet.....almost feel like I should re-read them again. Oh but that's so many pages.

Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away

I need a re-read, because on my first read I was simply devouring the pages to find out where the plot was going, and constantly getting lost over the minor houses, characters that appeared and disappeared, etc. I think the books deserve a paused reading, and the appendices are helpful, but my fingers are itching to draw a genealogical tree-type scheme (I always do this with books that have lots of interrelated characters). The good thing, for me, is that Mr Ber is hooked too, so I have a sounding board, and we can ask each other "so this Ramsay Bolton, remind me who he is?".

A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire, Book I
Length:33 hrs and 50 mins

A Clash of Kings: A Song of Ice and Fire, Book II
Length:37 hrs and 12 mins

A Storm of Swords: A Song of Ice and Fire, Book III
Length:47 hrs and 40 mins

A Feast for Crows: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book 4
Length:33 hrs and 56 mins

A Dance with Dragons: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book 5
Length:49 hrs

Roy Dotrice narrated all of them, but with the long gap between book 4 and 5, he got pretty old. According to wikipedia, he's 89 years old right now. His narration lost a lot of quality with book 5, so it's a lot harder to listen to. The earlier books, he did well on- the latter ones, not so much. It's understandable but frustrating.

We commute about 45 minutes a day, and long, long books make for a lot of entertainment. I'd like to finish the book, but my husband simply can't stand the narration. I've been listening to it on my own but it's not good enough to hold my attention for long.

*sigh*

I really am going to have to get it in book format. I hate paying for things twice!

Oh!
*light bulb goes off*
Library! I can get fiction there, too! :D
(Been using it for health related books only for so long I lost sight of that!)

So I have never read any of these books. I have the first three books, and I have season 1 DVD set. Do I read the books first or watch the DVDs first... decisions decisions.......

I would read the books, especially since there are far many more of them then DVD series available.
The series is good, but as always details are cut.
Just my humble opinion. :)

Yes, I think I will read Game of Thrones after I finish Gardens of the Moon, which is the Steven Erikson Mazalan Books of the Fallen.

I just spent a week in southern Spain and as there was little Internet, no TV and almost constant heavy rain, I started and finished the first book, A Game of Thrones and have started the second. And also a Tom Sharpe and a Terry Pratchett and knitted two thirds of a long scarf!!
I enjoyed it and thought the style and approach reminded me of an expanded version of an old fantasy I read once by Fletcher Pratt. Maria will probably know of it. I haven't seen the TV series as it's on Sky TV and it's against my religion to contribute a single penny to Rupert Murdoch's fortunes so probably will never see it but can imagine that Sean Bean is iconic as Ned. I like how he plays with your sympathies or distastes for various characters and you suspect you will get periodic challenges to your opinions. I like also his care in drawing distinct characterisations in a huge crowd of protagonists. And again, I like the constant references to events which don't yet unfold such as the coming winter and the dragons, whetting the appetite for more. And trying to figure out who will be significant later and who won't and just end up as morning star fodder. The preparation before he started must have been awesome.
My favourite characters up to this point are Tyrion and Arya but I guess I am meant to feel that way. Bran puzzles me. In the Martinverse petulance is always a warning sign and he has had his moments. Direwolves are great!

I think it may have been The Well of the Unicorn but it was probably close to 50 years ago that I read it.

Yay Tosh! (I get what you mean by rain in Southern Spain. Every time I've been in Almeria, land of the Spaghetti Western, there's always been a downpour) :D

Tyrion and Arya are probably my most constant favourite characters. Bran is... interesting. I'd say his, arm, leg situation is probably the "punishment" for his petulance. And I think you're right about sympathies changing.

Landing at Gib was a bit like having an Alton Tower roller coaster ride! The passengers applauded the pilot when they realised they'd survived. :D

You're lucky. As everyone knows, the planes in Spain fall mainly in the rain.

I'm just starting on this, and just finished the first book. Is it safe for me to read the other posts in this thread?

Funnily enough, I enjoyed the book but have no desire at all to watch the television series...
