So they finally revealed the US cover for Raising Steam.

In related news, I finally ordered the book from Canada.

I mean, it's not bad, as such.

You mean the book or the U.S. cover isn't bad?

It's not very... Moist! The UK cover is full of the sizzle of Moist sausages. This one sort of trundles along...

Interesting - a rock album based on Wintersmith.

I don't know anything about Steeleye Span. Any fans here?

Steeleye Span are great. They started out as a Steely Dan tribute band but discovered they were far more talented at playing their own stuff than Steely Dan's. I have the "As Time Goes By" album with the Duck Bogart cover.

The sound samples do sound good. And I do need to get more familiar with rock...

Behind the Sofa: Celebrity Memories of Doctor Who

Memories of people who've worked on the show, or have been writers, or involved in some way. Proceeds of the book go to Alzheimer's Research UK.

And a forward by Pratchett!

Dragons at Crumbling Castle and other stories

At this point, I don't know anything about this apart from the link itself. There was a collection of short stories published a couple of years ago - will this be some of the same material, or new stuff? My impression was that the previous book was all his known short stories.

So I finished Long Earth and Long War. I went in with low expectations, and only got the books for $1.99 on Kindle. And I really, really liked both.

It reminds me of good, solid, old-fashioned science fiction, firmly rooted in science with the exception of the premise of the Long Earth - seemingly endless versions of our planet, empty of humanity, into which people can "step".

The first book is a travel story, exploring the worlds and setting the stage, with its biggest weakness being the somewhat flat characters. The second is a lot more action-driven, and the characters merely introduced in the first book become more life-like, prominent, and vulnerable. It's also more Pratchettian, with one sequence set up as a mirror of a trademark Vimes adventure. It goes very differently, though.

It doesn't offer the beloved Diskworld hilarity, but neither does it sag as badly as the later Diskworld offerings.

Frelga recommends.

Glad you liked them! Did you know the third in the series is coming out next month?

By the way, did you ever post your review of Raising Steam?

I'm now reading The Long Mars, and enjoying, though it leaves a vague unsatisfied aftertaste. I found the same with The Long Earth and The Long War; somehow, I want more in the story.

The concept is most intriguing, and unfolds in a series of revelations that I enjoyed very much, but I feel like it's really just beginning, and that I'm only just getting to know the characters as the book ends.

Maybe because I so very much prefer loooooonnnnnng stories, that take the time to explore character detours and explorations of the environment. It feels like the Readers' Digest version, somehow.

I've been spoilt by some very long stories, I think, to the degree that when a story concept intrigues me (as this series does), then I want more depth and time and detail and colour and dialogue and thoughts and perspectives. More than a 300 page summary :D.

I've just started Long Mars too.

There's a new one just out: Dragons at Crumbling Castle and other stories

As of now it's got 7 5-star reviews and one 3-star review on amazon.co.uk. One reviewer compares it to Roald Dahl. Anyone here read it yet?

You all know about this, right?

If this is not available in the US, I am raising the black flag. [ img ]

Also, I have briefly considered buying a Pratchett book on Kindle, because it was on sale, and my copy is on the high shelf.

Wow, I had no idea!

Regarding its availability, you can just listen to BBC streaming radio live at their website.

BBC Radio 4

And now it's available on amazon!

Did anyone listen to it on the radio?
