Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the larger porn outfits are owned by the media giants under shell corporations.

The odds of the Internet surviving as is are small. The odds of parallel Internets (a la Bush's malaprop :D) coming into being are good. The fact that the US wants to maintain a stranglehold over the DNS infrastructure et al, and the rest of the world would really prefer stuff like that be, well, internationally goverened, is the other big arrow to the future.

I look at our present internet like a test run. It will probably remain long after the new internet and become like a shadow network, usable by those who don't want all the trappings and tracings of the new internet. This should leave users of the new Internet largely safe from predation compared to the present incarnation.

I remember reading the suggestion that messageboards will be replaced by live chat rooms with everybody's live image on screen. In other words, let's replace this format so wonderful for introverts and private people with the same cocktail-party horror (full of inane chatter) that many of us dislike, or can enjoy only in small doses.

I can't see it happening. After all, Usenet is still going strong, and it's based on technology from the 1970s.

I think the problem is that not enough people realize the Internet's potential for recursive generativity. It's easy for those of us steeped in cyberculture to forget that too, too many people interact with the Internet passively, and would actually welcome ways to do so better - in which one could trust the content that one received and verify that the people delivering it to you were who they said they were. I'm not sure that even if all these people realized the benefits of actively engaging with the Internet - creating rather than just receiving - they would see it as a value worth preserving.

Here, a huge problem is those parents who want other people to be responsible for safeguarding what their children see on the Internet. Although few of us would have a problem with somewhat greater regulation of the most explicit Internet sites, it's impossible to make the Internet a "safe" place for people of all ages without dumbing it down to kindergarteners' level (which many people want). I sincerely wonder how many people would be ok with stifling much of the discourse of the Internet - from the blogosphere to messageboard culture to sites that showcase non-G-rated artwork, poetry, writings, and music that for whatever reason cannot be published or marketed to the mainstream - in the name of "protecting the children". It's these people I fear, because they will be more than willing to accept a passive, corporate news-media-driven, child-friendly Internet.

You are right to fear them. Parenting takes work, hard work that many parents don't want to put in. Aside from that it too often takes both parents working all the time to raise a family these days. With more kids left on their own through convienence or necessity people will want to transfer some of the monitoring and supervising of media to the government, the industry, someone because they don't have the time or the inclination. Many parents want to be "pals" with their kids. This is immpossible, or should be, but in that effort it is better to have the whole internet ( substitue video games, movies, music.......)pasturized and Disneyfied so that it is safe for little Jonny to surf (play, watch, listen...) to......

Look what has happened to network TV in America it is all pap or worse with few and occassional exceptions. And that is how they'll get the internet. It will start with something no one can argue with like a measuer to trap child molesters and pedophiles stalking kids on the net. Who wouldn't want something done about that?

Next thing you know.........

I agree. Chatting isn't great. Even getting on IM with a few people you actually know and like is difficult for me....even one on one is kind of tough. I like being able to read and respond at my leisure which is why I'll always prefer message boards. I think a lot of other people do as well...enough to keep them going. :)

... and this would be why we don't watch TV at my house. At all. It's not even plugged into my antenna any more.

Some people still use records, cassette tapes and 8-tracks too. Some classics just won't die. I do message boards because of convenience, myself.

The internet, as we know it, is doomed and will totally disappear in a little over 5 years. The movement in that direction was inevitable, but began in earnest about 5 years ago.

The desire for censorship, taxation, and profit will collaborate to end the current era. It will be replaced by a higher speed delivery system for taxable subscription services.

Look at the movement from broadcast TV and radio to cable TV, satellite TV, and now satellite radio. We now have internet subscriptions for newspapers, news outlets associated with cable channels, music, video, magazines, dictionaries, encyclopedias, porn, software and just about everything else.

Those who think the current internet will survive in parallel don't understand the economics of its support. It will just vanish when the financial underpinnings are removed.

The open range of the pioneer days is disappearing, the barbed wire is going up everywhere.

Iavas,

You know if you take a green marker and circle the edge of your CDs, they will sound better than vinyl.

"Better" is in the ear of the beholder. :poke: I agree vinyl, tubes and other antique technologies sound different, but different doesn't mean better. I have fond memories of the sound of a pair of 807s in push pull, but the THD numbers alone tell the story. Vinyl can sound very good on a first playing. While CDs are nothing near permanent, the quality sound does last much longer than 1 play. You need to try HDCD or DVD-Audio on a good system.

I suspect as long as you have an IP address you will always be able to get through -somehow or other at least to the node - and then yes there may be id problems but that again is surmountable.

IT control and security isa always one step behind those who try to compromise it - this is the way that it works. The large corporations, especially the greedy ones are not even up to that one step behind - so personally I wouldn't worry too much.

Pandora's box has been opened it won't be shut again, the harder people try to close the lid down the more people will want to lever it open.

btw the porn industry is effectively shrinking - this is directly due to the easy availability of h/c stuff for free - which is another good example of the pandora's box effect.

For those in the censorship debate - controls on Pc's and those by service providers are easily got around, that's a right of passage for adolescents - the only solution is to take the cable out unless you are in the room.

Also consider wireless technology - that's notoriously difficult to tie down securely
