This is a story that has haunted me since childhood. I first saw the animated movie long, long ago in elementary scool, didn't read the book until high school, and found my own copy while rummaging through the basement shelves of a second-hand bookstore just before classes started at uni this week.

I'd forgotten, or maybe never realized, how amazing the book is. A story where the characters know they're in a fairy tale and aren't afraid to point that out. (Sorta reminds me of the cheesienss of Princess Bride.)

[I don't really know where I'm going with this right now... er...]

So I started reading it and immediately fell in love with it all over again. I found the passages that really stuck in my mind when I'd first read it, was delighted to finally be able to appreciate all the dark humor, and rediscovered how vibrant and real the characters were to me.

I finished reading the book Wednesday (had to pace myself, otherwise I could've finished it on Monday night) and for the first time in a very long while, I was really, really sad that the experience was over when I closed the back cover. :(

So, um... anyone else read it?

*shuffles feet*

I am afraid that this did little for me. I had to force myself to finish it.

Oh my.

One of the books I do love without thinking of reasons. Though there are many of them, and strong ones as well. Read it last year, I guess it was that time, the Romanian translation I'm afraid, but it was a pretty awesome translation (call it my future possible job or something, but I do pay attention to these details). Anyway, the style of this author is heavy with flavour, and each sentence of his filled my soul with living images, you bet!

Luvluvluv it  Wanna talk more?

I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map, And knew that somehow I could find my way back; Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too - So I stayed in the darkness with you

I've never read the book, only seen the movie and look forward to the live action film as well.

Must. Find. Book.

Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore

Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping

Yeah. You really have to! I did not come across the English version anywhere (quite difficult, in Romania), but the translation ... this I have seen many times, even as a re-print. So, good luck, and looking forward to comment it with you! :)

I had no idea it was originally a book, My mother taped it for me, when i was like 3, and lets just say it was a Beta tape... anyway, The movie's always haunted me, I finally saw it one day where i could order it and did, but it was so old it only came on VHS, till about 2 years ago, i saw a lonely copy on DVD in Kmart and almost cried... I love that Movie, there is an innocence about it that I can't not express and never regain...

so with that said... I'll have to try to find the book, i bet its wonderful!

I always felt sorry that the parts about the town and Prince Lir's 'birth' were not included.

(For little good reason the song "Levon" reminds me of it.)
