Stupid and suffering math's misery...

I ended up taking calculus last semester because of some lack of knowledge on my academic advisor's part. Was failing miserably in the middle of the semester. So....dropped the class. This semester, taking on a lower level math course since I need the math credit to graduate. Quantitative models and decision making. Should be a piece of cake. Annnnnnnd....here I am already hitting a brick wall. :bang:

I'm sure Steve could probably do this in his sleep. But does anyone know...

puzzle. A jazz concert brought in $165,000 on the sale of 8,000 tickets. If the tickets sold for $15 and $25 each, how many of each type of ticket were sold?

I'm sure it's probably the simplest thing ever with a common formula that I just need to pop this and that into, but I feel like I could kill something right now.

:help:

Any ideas or assistance would be so incredibly greatly appreciated. It's not the answer I really need...just how to do the problem. Answers are in the back of the book.

*goes to beat head against the wall some more*

A*$15 +B*$25 = $165,000

and

A + B = 8000

solve for A or B

I must've done a million of those bloody things for my Junior Cert. (Three years ago this summer)

All I know is that it involves simultaneous equations...

x+y=8,000 is one of them I think... (Because however many $15 tickets plus however many $25 tickets = 80,000 tickets...)

(x being the number of $15 tickets and y being the number of $25 tickets.)

You need one more equation... Umm...

15x+25y=165,000 could work... That gives an answer of...Ummm... A negative number for y... I've gone wrong somewhere...

The method is right, it's just I'm constructing the wrong equations...

Edit: crossposted with Narya, and it's because I took down the question wrong... should read x+y=8,000 sorry.

AHHH! Laureanna I love you.

A little portion of my sanity has returned. I am eternally grateful.

I was doing something similar to that but was missing the A+B=8000 bit....just kept trying to solve in the 15x+25y=$165,000 bit.

Thank yooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuu....

I knew it was going to be simple.

edit:

and thanks for the attempt as well, crucifer ;)

The thing is, if it has two variables, you need two equations. Three variables, three equations, and so on...

I knew the solution and people beat me.

:D

But yep, I'm glad you've got it figured out. :)

Definitely a kick to the ego. I was in enrichment clases in elementary school. Honors and AP classes in middle and high school. And now that problem's kicking my ass? :blackeye:

I'll blame it on my memory. Haven't had word problems like that in years and it sees no reason to retain such information. :P

oi.

I'm confused...the question is: how many of each type of ticket were sold?
If the answer is A + B = 8,000, that doesn't answer the question at all. It doesn't give you enough info to know what A or B are.

The answer is found by using these two equations:

15A+25B=165000
A+B=8000

And you solve for A then you solve for B and found out how many of each tickets were sold.

***sharpens pencil***

(well, keyboard, actually)

With a word problem, you just have to figure out how many variables you have, and get the same number of equations for it:

You have two variables:
X is the number of lower price tickets
Y is the number of higher price tickets

You need two equations for two variables:
X + Y = 8000 = number of tickets sold
15X + 25Y = 165000 = gross cost of tickets

Then substitute Y for X to get an equation with just one variable:
if X + Y = 8000
then Y = 8000 - X
substitute for Y:
15X + 25(8000 - X) = 165000
Multiply it out:
15X + 200000 - 25X = 165000
Add everything up:
10X = 35000
Solve for X:
X = 3500
Solve for Y:
Y = 8000 - X = 4500
Check answer:
15*3500 + 25*4500 = 165000

And Rune, you are anything but stupid. Your RP is amazing.

Well thank you. :D Although I'm afraid that RP muse might be rusty. :P She hasn't written in quite a while. Hmmm...I almost feel inspired to try it again. Maybe I'll poke around TORC.

Thanks for the cookies, sharky. ;) And lucky you. :P

Eer....not really. I saw enough of it vaguely while growing up since my dad's a Trek fanatic. But knowledge base of it is not very extensive.

Neither is mine, but it's not stopping me! :blackeye:

(And I would have had no clue how to do that problem either, so don't feel bad. I put away my knowledge of useless math a long time ago and only dust it off on an as needed basis.)

You're never done with math. Even once you're dead, I hear St. Peter makes you do a story problem to see if you are worthy of heaven. And if you're not, hell is where they make you do story problems forever. =:)
