The act was against the office of the president, and if that had happened here, he would be going to jail for a very long time. You don't have to respect the person, but you have to respect the rank.

Bush is so good at the shoe thing because he and his wife has a Wii fit game where he practices hitting soccer balls but you have to quickly dodge the occassional shoe.

and thats not the truth.

I'm not going to root for violence of any sort done on another person. Impeach Bush, put him on trial, imprison him...yes, go for it. Encourage violence toward him and laugh about it? Not for me.
Not only is DaveLF correct, but most of these actions are not available to an angry Iraqi. Who encouraged violence? I watched the video, and I don't recall seeing anyone calling the guy a chicken if he didn't. Apparently, the reporter is becoming something of an Iraqi folk hero to some.

I think the point is that Bush has demeaned that office to such an extent that people no longer respect the rank.

Also, what reason would an Iraqi have to respect the US president? Really?

Well I would think most people would respect the president of a country and see it as an office of respect and prestige. Certainly there are exceptions but I think that may be true most of the time.
I think people are mixing the office with the person in this case.

I could see an Iraqi person being grateful that Saddam Hussein is gone.

Why? And why should a person of an occupied country respect the top office of the occupying country?

Do you respect the office that Kim Jong Il holds? Do you respect the office of Mugabe?

It's just a shoe and Bush is just a guy. An important guy but still.

Yup.

I might put more thought into this situation if it wasn't just a lil' ol' shoe that missed its target anyway. :P But he seems in good spirits, no one was seriously hurt, and I feel comfortable laughing about that. If things had turned out badly, jokes would still be made, but I would acknowledge they were in bad taste. Of course throwing the shoe was disrespectful. But nicer guys and better presidents have had plenty worse things done to them than Bush and that projectile so feh. El-oh-el I shall.

Tonight on Daily Show, the moment of zen was a clip of Bush giving a pound to Santa. Hilarious or disrespectful?

Did he slip it in Santa's G-string? This is important.

But this wasn't just "a person" at open event. This was a press conference, where you were invited to attend.

I certainly respect the office, although not what either of those two men have done to it. And even so if I was an invited guest at a press conference, I would show the proper behavior. If I didn't think I could do that, I would not attend.

No, E, not a British monetary unit. A fist pound.

Jewelsong,

You have heard of acts of defiance, right? If I was an angry Somethingian, and the Otherites had been occupying my country for six years, I think I would find a way to insult their leader, and by extension them, upon their exit; even if I was invited.

One last thing: saying the office automatically deserves respect is like saying that all soldiers are heroes because they are in the army, regardless of whether they have done anything heroic. I just don't agree with conferring honors to someone that has not done anything to deserve it.

Now, I'm off to work.

I owe this quip to CBC's "The Current":

Currently, President Bush is relieved that he didn't invade Holland.
