I've been listening to Carlos Santana for a long time now, and one of my favourite pieces is Europa, which I have only ever heard as an instrumental. Very recently, I heard the lyrics for the first time, in a collaboration between Santana and Paco de Lucia, and I have completely fallen in love with it!

However, I don't understand Spanish. I have a little of the latin roots from French and Italian, but this is totally inadequate for understanding the subtleties of song lyrics.

Could someone with greater knowledge than mine have a go at translation? the lyrics are below.

Thank you!
Quote:
En que derrota te ganè.
En que batalla me rendì.

Me defendia igual que un lobo gris.
Mejor la muerte que el redil.

Me sorprendì buscandote.

Te llamo, Te encuentro siempre a mi lado, Soy tu esclavo liberado,

My translation (blanks are words I'm not sure about):
Quote:
In what ______ did I win you
In what battle ____________

I defended myself like a grey wolf
Better the woman then the ________

I surprised myself searching for you
Like the winter searches for the sun
Like the drunk searches for alcohol,
their way of surviving

I stop being, your enemy and I drank a single swallow from your cup
I want you to live with me
I want to meander through your paths of europe

I belong to you, I want you, I feel you, I envelop you in silence
I call you, I find you always at my side, I am your liberated slave,
Tied, Lovers, because I have never been loved this way...

And I wish you ______, _______, the breeze of your kisses I breathe, and at your ______
and with one breath I put at your feet everything you see.
willing to live and to die for you.

I stop being, your enemy and I drank a single swallow from your cup
I want you to live with me
I want to meander through your paths of europe

Goodness! :Q It sounds much milder as an instrumental, eh?

And yov... Thank you! How could I possibly have overlooked that you are Spanish-speaking?! Of course, I knew, but... :doh1:

Not surprisingly, your translation is so much more satisfying that Babel Fish! You retain the poetry.

I've tweaked yov's translation a bit. :)
Quote:
In which defeat did I win over you
In what battle did I surrender.

I defended myself like a grey wolf
Better dead than in a pen

I surprised myself searching for you
Like the winter searches for the sun
Like the drunk searches for alcohol,
their way of surviving

I stopped being your enemy and drank your cup all in one go
I want you to live with me
I want to meander through your paths of europe

I belong to you, I want you, I feel you, I envelop you in silence
I call you, I find you always at my side, I am your liberated slave,
Tied, Lovers, because I have never been loved this way...

And I desire you, obsessed, thirsty, the breeze of your kisses I breathe, and your breath
and with one sigh I put at your feet everything you see.
willing to live and to die for you.

I stopped being your enemy and drank your cup all in one go
I want you to live with me
I want to meander through your paths of europe
[/quote]

Ber!   All the blanks filled and the rhythm of the poetry restored! I have always - always! - wanted to learn to speak Spanish, but as the years have passed I let it slide. My recent rediscovery of Latin jazz has reignited my desire to learn the language.

Al, I'll email it to you. I may add some other Paco de Lucia...he's good! Might have to wait til Monday as I'm not sure I've got the tracks in my iTunes library at home - I know I have them at work as I play them constantly. Will check now and send asap.

It's a tricky language, Impy, but if you have some basics of Italian and French, it shouldn't be too alien. :)

Paco de Lucia is a legend in Spain - I'm not too keen on his style of music (flamenco is not my thing) but I respect him a lot.

All the ones worth learning are tricky, it seems. :)

Al, did the files arrive? Took ages for yahoo to send them, so I just want to check the email didn't get lost in transit.

Ber, I've been listening to some Paco De Lucia recordings for the last few months. While I've not enjoyed heavy duty Flamenco, I've come to really appreciate some of his music, and have been awed by his incredible proficiency on the guitar - and I really enjoy guitar, both acoustic and electric, classical and modern. I haven't heard much of his work - very little, actually - but what I have heard has galvanised me to seek out more. I certainly understand why his name is legend in Spain!
