Well I suppose one can say that the collapse of the entire global banking system was preferable as long as it's just idle talk. In the real world something had to be done.

Before you answer, ask yourselves whether the insults to PM Brown and President Sarkozy were really just fark-ups (that somehow the State Dept's Office of Protocol failed to catch)- or deliberate acts of spite by a snotty, egotistical little boy.

And that justs sounds downright unpleasant. Snotty egotistical little boy? You post with a good sprinkling of bile don't you?
Over here the wave of outrage wouldn't have drowned a gnat.

But that's the point- nothing meaningful has been done. All we have to date is Obama and Congress running in circles, flinging ungodly amounts of money around at random in the desperate hope that some of it might stick- without doing a thing actually to shore up the financial system.

My privilege as a private person rather than a Head of State or Government. Neither Brown nor Chirac behaved in such a boorish manner towards GWB, no matter how much privately they despised him.

I do hope you realise that the swooning love many Britons have for Obama is not reciprocated- he hates you. Worse yet, he allows that personal grudge to intrude into policy.

I however am not restrained by protocol, and I repeat- Obama is childish, petty and conceited. And, as we are quickly learning, incompetent.

Just a quick reminder to all members posting in this thread; attack the argument, not the individual. I would prefer not to have to drop this essay I'm working on to come and start banninating people. :P

 Where has Obama said he hates Britons. Links and proof. Period. Thank you.

Agreed; of course, we Britons would always greet a moderate sort, who promised outreach and global vision etc., but the only snub I can think of is the rather inappropriate gift, which seems to me to simply be a matter of getting used to the diplomatic world. :)

It is well known that President Obama greatly prefers Green tea to English breakfast tea.
In addition he has never been photographed eating an English muffin. He loathes Yorkshire pudding as well. He prefers his beer cold - imagine that! And probably the greatest indication of his hatred for all Brits, he prefers his meat in anything less than a condition of being drastically overcooked.

And we will not even get into his classic record collection with rack after rack of Motown and Stax records but not any vinyl by the Beatles, Stones or even Cliff Richard.

An anglophile he is not. ;)

Actually what I see is neither competence nor incompetence in terms of fiscal and monetary policy.

I see "grab what you can before the game is up" as decades of Keynesian policy are crashing down around their ears. Those in elected office are looting the treasury to give it to the politically connected elites without a care for tomorrow, and the Federal Reserve is enabling it by printing money at ever alarming rates.

They are of mixed competence in this looting - they are able to pass it off as stimulus, but were unable to not have people notice the AIG bonuses.

*teabag counting*
Let it go down on record that the three people in this flat have, between them, at least seven distinct kinds of tea, only two of which are recognised as 'English breakfast' teas, as well as five kinds of coffee.
And people say students have too much time on their hands. :P

Oh, dear. You are aware that the State Department retains an entire career division dedicated to handling protocol (which covers, besides gifts, things like press conferences and state dinners and all the other things which the WH dropped the ball on)?

Conveniently anonymous 'State Department official' who took part in the planning of the event: "There's nothing special about Britain. You're just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn't expect special treatment."

And, when it turned out the US DVD Valu-Pak won't even play in the UK, "A White House spokesman sniggered when I put the story to him".

And don't forget the ignominius return of the Churchill bust.

Accident? Yeah, right.

What is the source of Obama's grudge? I don't know. Perhaps his grandfather's being caught up in the Mau-Mau affair. Perhaps the slave trade. Perhaps 'imperialism,' or Blair's support of the Iraq war. Perhaps the British Ambassador's assessment of Candidate Obama as a puffed-up lightweight. But it's very clear that Obama likes the United Kingdom a lot less than he likes Iran.

Really Solicitr. Obama has a grudge against the Brits!?!?!?!?!?

And you base this on some DVD's?

solicitr is another one to put on ignore. It's all paranoid, conspiracy theorist verbal diarrhea as far as I'm concerned.

sf, the Brits drink their beer cold as well. :P

The misguided ones do.
Strictly speaking it should be a trifle cool, no more than that.

I guess most Brits are misguided as I've yet to see anyone drink beer that was a trifle cool!

Though Iavas's grandparents keep their beer in I guess what you'd call a larder? It's a room that isn't refrigerated but still fairly cool.

Love you too, Eruname. Not that an Obamatron's opinion really matters.
