SPOILER
Both Kirk and older Spock had reason to be there - albeit bumping into eachother on one planet was...unlikely. The fact that Scotty was there too was completely random.

Destiny? Ack.

SPOILERS ???

Well, it's not too hard to buy for someone like me, who does believe in destiny or whatever. They were all meant to be together in the end, just like Kirk was supposed to be the captain, not Spock.

Saw it again tonight. Absolutely superb. The only thing that doesn't rhyme is bumping into Scotty. Just too much against the probabilities in this alternate reality.
And Kirk being ejected out of the Enterprise and landing on a random planet that just happens to be in the area of where Spock ends up being isn't against the probabilities? Oh and that Spock happens to be from an alternate future. :P
Well, when you think about it, how many other places local to Vulcan could young Spock maroon Kirk without killing him? When two independent groups are in the same haystack, chances are they'll find the same needle. So landing on the same planet wasn't too shocking. Finding each other sort of was, though it does make sense that young Spock would have arranged to dump Kirk within walking distance of a Star Fleet installation. I guess old Spock was also moving in that direction.

Scotty being there was a happy coincidence. I think even old Spock was caught off guard by that one. I wasn't under the impression there was any sort of great destiny at work. Even in the alternate time line, the personalities involved were basically the same, and therefore naturally inclined to gravitate towards certain positions.

LoTR fans make me giggle sometimes.

Bilbo in the same cave in the same mountain as Gollum, winning a riddle game (in the dark) happening upon or taking the one ring of power (a ring that can destroy the entire world) totally logical.

Spock depositing Kirk 14 miles away from a station, totally illogoical

the only thing illogical about this movie was the Spock romance...that was just weeeeeeird. :pout:

Fascinating that I never picked up on it in the original TV series. ;) :D
Of course Kirk/Scotty reaction was perfect.

Ah, but this is alternate reality.

Spock and Nurse Chapel always had a thing going on, at least in Nurse Chapel's mind anyway! So it's not completely a new idea.

No wonder Spock wrote a book about how to raise kids, apparently he might have quite a few. It also explains why he was still working at 130..... all that child support.

And to think all this time I thought Kirk was the player :doh1:

Why wouldn't young Spock drop Kirk off near the other humanoids on that planet? It'd increase his chances for survivial, but you don't go beaming someone into someone else's abode without permission. That'd just be rude- not to mention potentially lethal for the one beamed down, depending on security measures. So he dumped him within easy walking distance of one humanoid and left without having to pause for explanations.

Of course, he should have just thrown him in the brig, but maybe that wasn't finished yet?

SPOILER:

I have thought of a massive plot hole. Astronomical proportions.

In the future, Old Spock was preventing Romulus' sun from going Supernova, so that Romulus wouldn't explode, yis? Now, we know he failed.

However, if he had succeeded, surely one of the following would have happened:

a) black hole sucks up Romulus. Everyone... goes back in time? I dunno.

b) Black hole sucks up sun, then, because it's made of 'Red Matter', somehow ceases to exist, leaving behind a cold, frozen, sunless Romulus. Everyone dies.

No matter what Spock did, Romulus was doomed.

It was fun, but didn't make a whole lot of sense. It was also your standard "small world" prequel in that the later-to-be-major characters were seemingly responsible for everything important that happened in the past. I would classify it as fantasy set in space rather than sci-fi, but maybe that would go for all the Star Treks.

There was one major cringe for me, when Spock was told "for once in your life, put logic aside and do what you feel is right". The ESF world of Hollywood just can't deal with INTs.

There were plot holes that were like Black Holes, honest to gawd, but it was fun in a sorta mindless way. I thought the guy playing young Spock was really good but the rest were just, you know, generic cuties.

It really truly reminded me of Galaxy Quest. Maybe they did that on purpose?

From his wife, according to the special features we watched on the DVD.

I thought Karl Urban played McCoy perfectly.

I only found out this morning that McCoy was Karl Urban. Yeah, he did a good job.

I thought everyone was beautifully in character. :)

That wouldn't surprise me. :) I was particularly reminded of Galaxy Quest when Sulu hits warp drive for the first time, only for the brand new shiny Enterprise not to budge from the docking station :D much to his embarrassment, and Captain Pike says to him, quirking a quizzical eyebrow: "Is the parking brake on?" :LMAO:

Captain Pike rocked. :) They all rocked. The whole film rocks.

First time round, I only had eyes for Spock :blackeye: but I wouldn't say no to Chris Pine's Kirk if he tried to pick me up in a bar. :P I really liked how Pine nailed Kirk's arrogance and yet made him likable.

The opening sequence makes me all mushy. Brave George Kirk, Captain for just 12 minutes and saving 800 lives, including his wife and baby Kirk. :bawl:

And I love Nimoy.
