Survey USA

77% of Americans support a public option in health care reform with 58% saying it is Extremely Important to have that in the bill.

If there is no public option, is this bill real reform, or just another band aid on a deep gash?

I posted this on TORC.

Well-written, non-strident, thoughtful article here:

http://potentialandexpectations.wordpre ... re-system/

This essay is NOT a rant. She acknowledges the good things about the US medical system, which she appreciates very much.

And she also has very good things to say about our NHS.

Anyway, a poster at one of my American Expat forums wrote an awesome blog post which outlines exactly why I'm thankful to have the NHS. It's slightly long, but very worth the read:

This American's Experience of Britain's Healthcare System
I beat ya to it! :P Though to be fair she's a member at an Expat forum I'm also a member of. ;) But I've seen it far and wide...it's really been passed around a lot.

OMG this video made me absolutely livid! Moronic teabaggers shout down a woman in a wheelchair!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/0 ... 75472.html

Ugh, I wanted to punch some of those people. They aren't even listening and they don't have a clue as to what they're talking about.

We've all seen the stupidity you can get in America (Jay Leno's Jaywalking was always a good example) but I'm having a hard time comprehending the stupid we're seeing now. I especially loved the old woman at the end of the video who was against socialised medicine, but is on medicare(!) and said she'd been working since she was 15 so deserved assistance now. :bang: :help: :bawl: :nono: :bang:

This is why I have given up on trying to talk about health care at all with damn near everyone. Mostly I do this :doh1: :bang: :bang: It's just absolutly amazing.

If you watch this on youtube, there's a comment about the British Death Panels....and how in the UK you all kill your old people off. So my question is this....the Queen is like 110 years old what's up with that?

British Death Panels would be annoying... all the tea, and cheerio right before you have to be killed by a gay, liberal hippie.

Funny, considering the elderly population of UK is increasing...but then most of the talk about health care in the US defies belief, anyway!
Quote:
The population of the UK is ageing. Over the last 25 years the percentage of the population aged 65 and over increased from 15 per cent in 1983 to 16 per cent in 2008, an increase of 1.5 million people in this age group. Over the same period, the percentage of the population aged 16 and under decreased from 21 per cent to 19 per cent. This trend is projected to continue. By 2033, 23 per cent of the population will be aged 65 and over compared to 18 per cent aged 16 or younger.

The fastest population increase has been in the number of those aged 85 and over, the ’oldest old‘. In 1983, there were just over 600,000 people in the UK aged 85 and over. Since then the numbers have more than doubled reaching 1.3 million in 2008. By 2033 the number of people aged 85 and over is projected to more than double again to reach 3.2 million, and to account for 5 per cent of the total population.

We're going to have our work cut out to kill 'em all. How many do you need for a death panel? That's an awful lot of jobs. It will help keep unemployment at bay.

So true.

Listen, a guy on another message board says he had to "go hat in hand" for permission for an operation or some treatment in England. Any truth to that? Or maybe it was Germany.

cannot tell you about that.... but I do admit to going with "hat in hand" on many occasions to ask for many things, heck, beg for something I wanted, and it never was to the government.

Wait a minute,,,,, I don't wear a hat! So what was that in hand? ;)

I'd encourage any UK citizen to watch the Indpendent Women's Forum ad. Apparently your women only have the option for death if they get breast cancer.

Holy Rusted Metal Batman...

on the link Elan provided it says this on the UK birth rate.

The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) for 2008 gives an average of 1.97 children per woman in England and Wales. This is an increase from 1.92 in 2007 and is the seventh consecutive annual increase from a low point in 2001 when the TFR was 1.63. The last time the TFR exceeded 1.97 was 35 years previously in 1973 when it was 2.00.

Death rate in older people is down and birth rate is up? WTF are you people doing, this is illogical. This does not compute.
And to top it all off you have no raging forest fires destroying the evil gays anywhere.

Running out of room is what we're doing....

And btw, those figures hide something else:
Quote:
The average UK-born woman has 1.84 children – an increase of 10% in just four years – while women living here who were born abroad have about 2.5 children. The ONS figures show that nearly a quarter of babies in England and Wales in 2008 were born to mothers who came from outside the UK, most commonly women from Pakistan, Poland and India.
