I'm just out of a three hour recording session, of three minutes of music. It was really tedious, mainly because the person who arranged the choral parts isn't a singer, so whenever she was asking for something, she put it really badly, in a way that would encourage bad habits, or just be plain contradictory... Oh well...

Short story long, the guy who wrote the piece is the producer for the Corrs, and he's a really good friend of Nelson Mandela. They were chatting one day, and Mandela said something about music, which this guy asked to record, and he wrote a piece around it. I'm in the last three minutes, singing in all of the official languages of south Africa, except English, which is represented by mandela speaking at the start. It's a pretty awesome piece tbh. It incorporates the clink of his cell door as it was opened for the last time and so on, and the words are all about standing together and being united through music.

The road to celebrity continues. ;)

I've just watched some episodes of the truly excellent Folk America series on BBC TV and one American said he couldn't imagine the Civil Rights movement without the music that went with it.
Music is a force beyond itself.

Nice, Crucifer!

You know, famous rock stars make their recording sessions less boring through the copious use of hard drugs and gallivanting* with groupies.

I'm not suggesting anything here.

We started counting the number of takes it took to record certain bars and made bets on them. One of them, which had difficult words, the guy next to me (who, by the by, is running a flashmob choir atm... watch this space) said would take twelve takes. I said no way. More like 18.

28 takes later...

You mean you're recording one bar at a time?

Each 2 bars (mostly) was in a different language you see. And most of the South African languages look very similar, so we had the word "Linstwe"(voice) twice. But the first time, it was pronounced "l(nn)tshWAY", and the second time "lin-TSWEE", so the producer decided the easiest way to do it was in small sections...

If anyone wants to buy this or this and send some royalties my way, then be my guest... I could use the petty cash. :p

Yuss... That's like 5 cent! w00t!

Of course, I did a big corporate recording a few weeks ago, with a big mad secrecy clause, that'll get me lots of royalites, IF I'm credited on both the thing and it's separate disc, rather than just the separate disc, which only hardcore nerds will buy. That recording session was even more frustrating because the conductor was shite. More info on this in the not too distant future.

Very true, Tosh! BTW, have you seen Pete Seeger's biography, "The Power of Song"? It is just AWESOME! (And so is he!)

The most moving moment of Obama's inauguration for me was to see him up there singing 'This Land is Your Land' along with Bruce Springsteen. Here's this man, whom many revere as the father of folk music, who was once blacklisted as a Communist, and unable to sing on network TV for over 17 years, singing at a presidential inauguration. He also marched in many civil rights demonstrations during the 60's, and was present at the Plaza when Martin Luther King made his famous "I Have A Dream" speech. He didn't write "We Shall Overcome", but he did make it the anthem of the Civil Rights movement.

More recording. Just back from a 3 hour rehearsal on an Operetta by some Irish American. It's called 'Eileen' and it's a pile of paddywhacking shite. He actually wrote the words 'begorrah' and 'whisht' in the score. :s But it's well paid, so we're not saying much. Victor something or other wrote it in New York in 1917, so it's full of pseudo nationalistic bollocks about Éire go Brách and people called Biddy and all the divilmint they get up to while foiling the British colonel's (sung by my singing teacher :D) plans. Money for negative stereotypes? Yes please!
