I got this idea from Nienna - blame her! :P

This is how to play - run your chosen quote through the translation party, and post the result. The person who can identify the original quote wins, and posts the next question.

If the result is so far from the original that you doubt anyone will get it, you can choose to post some of the intervening translations as well.

First quote, posting three intervening translations:
Quote:
My business and why you are not.
My business, why not with you.
My business is why.

Oh, I get the blame for everything, right?

Would this be Bilbo to Gandalf: What business is it of yours what I do with my own things?

...or something like that?

Yes. =:)

No. =:)

Actually, I was thinking that my initial question was too hard - if this game is to go anywhere, we should stick to familiar quotes, or longer ones so that you can guess the context.

So I'll reveal the first one, and post a new one - it was "Why's none of my business, nor yours" (The Gaffer to the Black Rider).

And here's a new one:
Quote:
If the glittering gold, many people are looking for, we lost.

Okay...my turn :D

Hatch to take away the freedom of some wild animals
Free to hatch some wild animals
Some animals hatch free

But who knows what she spoke to the darkness, alone, in the bitter watches of the night, when all her life seemed shrinking, and the walls of her bower closing in about her, a hutch to trammel some wild thing in?

Spoken by Gandalf to Eomer, though I presume you only gave the last little bit, at risk of seizing up the translation engine completely.

And now for something that is no more absurd before the translation than after:

Hearties hop and with me! Hobbits! All pony! We are like a party!

You can give longer quotes by entering them one phrase at a time. Works for me :D

Is your quote Tom Bombadil to the hobbits?

The quote above is extremely familiar, but so little of it remains in what I posted that I'll repost with some of the context:
Quote:
He is walking to work using the last words I heard in the quiet.

If I "and" he "," The Ring with a stranger, I was with him.
 Wow. It's so far from the original I don't know if anyone will recognize it.

Okay, maybe this game is too hard, since the translator changes the words and meaning so completely.

Yep, we didn't recognize it. :(

Putting it through a normal translator (using a few different steps) yields:

I become the ring in Mordor which take product, so that I did not know the ways.

Here's one that's just about recognisable
Quote:
We have a lot of people who are different ares in order to access different kinds of people we have gathered all the information for many. However, it can not be determined. However, we have specified all of our time.

Is this a familiar or an obscure quote?

Hugely familiar. Look for the recognisable words rather than the meaning!

Ooh! Ooh! It's the one about (from memory) "So do all who live to see such times. However, that is not for them to decide. All they have is to decide what to do with the time given them."

(as I said, it's from memory, so may not be word-perfect)

Okay, I ran this through Translation Party, and I think this is the funniest result ever:
Quote:
He's dead! Instead, go to bed!
