I just wondered if I'm the last person here to get around to seeing the Buffy series. I wasn't impressed with the movie, and thus put off trying the show until now. It turns out to be really great. If you like urban fantasy, this one's the best I've seen. :)

We just finished season 5. :Q

I haven't watched it, but your reviews have intrigued me. I plan to look for it at the library.

For me, it was one of those TV shows that was pretty good and if it was on when I flipped the dials or was planning to watch TV anyway that evening, then I watched it. I usually enjoyed what I saw. It did not rise to the level of something I planned my schedule around or anything I would tape because I did not want to miss it.

So I do not know how to vote in this poll.

Saw the movie but not the tv show.

The movie was different enough to make me sort of want to see the series.

I'm pretty sure Buffy is 70% of what got me through interning at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. (The other 30% is Doctor Horrible and office nerf gun wars.) One of the other interns brought the full series and we started watching it as intern bonding time after work. The other two lost interest around season 3 so I stole it and powered through six seasons in three months (and finished season 7 when I got back to school). I was so tired after work that I would go back to my room, eat dinner, and then watch three episodes before falling asleep. It was almost an addiction.

Even the worst episodes were enjoyable in some way. The writing is fantastic, the balance between between character/arc driven and one offs was perfect, not to mention that it was kind of cathartic watching Buffy kick ass every night. Also, the musical episode? Pure genius.

I saw the odd episode when it was on over here, but again, it wasn't something I set my watch for. I'm sure if I had watched the whole thing from start to finish then maybe I would have got into it more.

It really is one of those shows best watched from start to finish, since relationships evolve and fall apart- both interpersonal ones, and the big bad villians that sometimes last a whole season. If you don't see the build up, you don't get the full picture of what's happening.

In other words, there's a story arc- everything doesn't return to status quo at the end of each episode.

I thought the first season was kind of cute but not terribly addictive, but halfway through season 2 things really got going and we couldn't stop watching it. And then at the the beginning of season 4, "Angel" spun off into his own show, and they are still intertwined enough that you have to watch both of them. So that's slowed down our obsessive Buffy watching for the last two seasons.

For a while my favorite episode was "Band Candy".... but so much more very dramatic stuff has happened since then that I may have to reevaluate that opinion.

So would it be possible to just skip season 1 altogether and start with season 2?

Its only a half season anyway Jude so you might as well watch it for the set up.

No.

There's character development going on that you'd need. The parts that we found so gripping in season 2 wouldn't mean much, if you don't know the history behind them.

I didn't mean to imply that season one was bad... it was just another DVD series we were watching in rotation with the other ones. Once we got thoroughly hooked in season 2, we pretty much quit watching the other series that we have, even though there are several we haven't seen before and the outcome is just as much of a mystery.

"Buffy" just such good storytelling that the others seemed stupid beside it. We'll appreciate them more later, when we are done with "Buffy" and "Angel". So we decided not to spoil the *other* TV shows by watching them when they would just be annoying time wasters.

Just got done with season 6 very late last night. We got so caught up we just skipped over a couple of "Angel"s. We'll have to get caught up again tonight, now that the crisis is over.

I have to agree with that! It's just great. I can see now where the beginnings of the idea of Dr. Horrible came from, in season 6. :)

It's definitely an addiction for us. My brain is caught in Buffyverse. The only cure is to run right through season 7 and be done with it. Of course, then there will be reruns.....

I've realized I'm a James Marsters fan, now. I love his voice in the "Dresden Files" audio books, and thought he was great in the Torchwood episodes he was in--but his role in the Buffy series is awesome. I can't wait to see what happens with his character in season 7. He's a really great actor.

I know exactly what you mean. I would see sharp bits of wood outside (my office was right next to the shop so there were random scraps and splinters all over the place) and think "If a vampire attacked me right now, I could use that as a stake!" And then I'd think, "That's absurd! It's sunny out right now."

Season 6 gets a lot of grief but I think it was my favourite and not just because of the musical episode, either. They went to such dark and personal places and I loved that all of the real villains were ultimately human. That more than made up for the uneven quality of some episodes to me.

Ugh, I hated season 6 with a passion. All the rest of it was pretty good though!!! :D

I've now watched the entire series twice and seen all the special features and most of the commentaries. I think I'm done for a while now. I'll be watching it again next year, probably, though.

I liked Season 6. It was kinda dark, but still intense, and the character developments were logical evolutions from what went on in season 5.

I've now watched the beginning of Season 1, so the poll is no longer accurate. :P

I've seen up through...part of season 3, I believe, but then I got distracted with other things and stopped watching.

It's still on my list to restart and finish, but I'm not sure when that will be. I have other shows I prioritize.

*ridiculously late input*

I watched it faithfully in its first run, all 6 seasons.
