I'm living, still, lol. I've missed this board. I'm glad to see that many of the same old people are still here. A little bit of stability is a good thing.:-)

There are 7 seasons. (Eight if you count the graphic novel continuation, though.)

But more importantly, what do you think so far?

What's this about a graphic novel continuation?

I'm really enjoying it so far. I have a bit of an issue having to suspend my disbelief - not so much because of the supernatural aspect, since that's a given - but how can so much stuff go on at that school without the police getting involved? And how can Buffy's mom be so smart and so dumb simultaneously?

I guess whenever an author tries to mix fantasy with the real world there are difficulties that don't arise when you just write a pure fantasy that takes place in a different universe or world. I can't think of any of these "hybrid fantasies" that I would call one hundred percent successful; at least they can be enjoyable enough that I can disregard that niggling inner voice that says "Hey, that doesn't make any sense!". On the other hand, I can totally immerse myself in Middle Earth or the Discworld and believe every word of it, since I don't have to work to reconcile it to this world.

I'm rambling a bit - I'm distracted because I'm simultaneously composing an important email. :D The short answer is I really, really like the series.

:oops:Indeed. I don't know where I got 6 from...I guess I wasn't counting the first season.

Joss Whedon had another season in mind, but the network cancelled him. So, he continued the story in comic book form.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffy_the_ ... ason_Eight

"Angel" splits off from "Buffy" in Season 4 and continues as a separate series for 5 seasons. When it ends as a TV show, it also goes on as a graphic novel.

I bought all the comic books they'd completed as of last fall (collected into bound book form), but haven't read them all yet. I'm not making the transition to comic books well. I've never been a fan of the media, and don't enjoy them as much. I get as much from the wikipedia synopsis as I do the actual comic! The artwork is great, and the stories are OK, but it just doesn't reach out and grab me like the TV series did.

I'm not crazy about comics either. Will I be left hanging if I just finish with season 7?

Can I leave the Angel series until after I've finished Buffy, or should I watch them concurrently?

I didn't watch Angel until after I finished Buffy and didn't really have any problems. They only crossover a couple of times, really, and the internet quickly cleared up my confusion on one of those plot points.

The crossovers in the first season of Angel are more significant than the rest of the series, in my opinion, but not vital. There are only a couple of things that happen in "Angel" that affect the "Buffy" storyline and you can probably work around them, like Mossy says. I don't think you could watch "Angel" without seeing "Buffy" first, though. Too many spoilers and too much unexplained backstory. That's kind of obvious, isn't it? Don't watch the spinoff before the original! :horse:

edit: And no, you won't be left hanging at the end of Buffy. It came to a quite satisfactory conclusion. I kind of agree with the network, actually. Season 7 was a good ending point.

Okay, that's good to know. I won't bother with the comics, then.

So, what's the ideal watching order? All of Buffy, then all of Angel? Or Buffy seasons 1 - 4, and then alternate season by season? Or does it matter?

We went to the trouble of watching them in episode air date order, since we didn't want to risk spoilers. That turned out not to be necessary. After the first season, the stories are pretty much separated, with cameo appearances once in a while back and forth, but nothing plot changing, for the most part.

My son watched the first season of Angel when it split off, but ended up abandoning Angel as his time off from school came to an end and just finished the Buffy side. It didn't seem to hurt his appreciation of the series. My younger daughter lives closer and could have kept borrowing the DVDs as needed, but got caught up in the Buffy story and abandoned Angel after one or two seasons. She finished Buffy and is now watching Angel.

Neither of them seemed to be bothered much by the crossovers, except to comment in surprise at how the actor that played Angel had aged after not seeing him for a couple of seasons! I have the same reaction when I go back and see season 1 of Buffy again. "Ohhhhhhhhh! Look how young they all are!" :)

As far as the Ideal way? Air date order is good, but annoying to get up and switch out the DVD after EACH episode if you are marathoning. My son, when he was still trying to get both series done in a couple of weeks, had one series in the DVD player and the other in the Blue Ray player and just did it all from the couch with remotes.

But that isn't really necessary. Angel isn't quite as addictive as Buffy, so it's really easy to drop Angel and keep going with Buffy. It all depends on how good your frustration tolerance is. They have season long plots all planned out (for both series) , so when they start tossing in lots of cliff hangers, it's hard to switch back and forth when you desperately want to know What Happens Next!

Either way works. Air date or series by series. Or even season by season, if you want to do that. :)

BtVS was the first series I ever acted fanishly over

Unfortunately up to this day I didn't get around to see anything further than season 5.

How could you stop at the end of season 5??? :Q I couldn't slap the first disk of season 6 in fast enough when we finished the last episode of season 5.

Is it my imagination, or did the guy that played "Ted" in that Season 2 episode look like John Ritter?

I looked for his name in the credits but didn't see it

It is not your imagination -- that was indeed John Ritter himself.

Ha! I was right! :horse:

Things really start moving half-way through Season 2. It's like a book that you can't put down. Unfortunately, unlike a book, I can't take it on the bus with me, or watch it during my coffee breaks at work. :bawl:

Spoilers! Spoilers!

Read no further if you haven't watched the show yet...

Quote:
One of the disadvantages of watching a show from the DVD's long after it has wrapped up is that, no matter how diligently you avoid spoilers, some clues are given from DVD covers of subsequent seasons. If I hadn't seen covers of post-2 seasons, I would have assumed that Season 2 ends with the killing of Angel. Well, I know that's not the case, but at least I have no idea how the current situation will get resolved...

The advantage, on the other hand, is that I don't have to wait a full week between episodes. Or, worse yet, have to wait a few months between seasons, especially if they have the bad manners to end on a cliffhanger :D
