Thanks, ED. So far my cooking experiments have never included anything that involved fermentation (at least not on purpose!).

I was going to offer to send you some, Jude, because I'm going to be touring our local meadery soon...but it's probably illegal to ship alcohol across the border, isn't it? :(

It probably is - I'll ask my local LCBO just to make sure.

Thanks anyway! :)

Well, I haven't been around in quite a while, but it seems appropriate that I make a comeback in a booze thread! ;)

Jude, I know you can get it at some LCBOs. I was at one the other day and stumbled accross some Mead. Also Trafalger brewing co. makes Meads and they're sold at most Beer Stores. They're mostly flavoured meads though, blueberry, black currant, citrus, raspberry, wildberry come to me off the top of my head. I work there... :P They go for around 12 bucks a bottle.

Thanks for the info! And welcome back!

Have you tried any of the flavoured meads?

No I never have. Sweeter beverages have never tickled my fancy too much. Though I plan on trying some meads at the beer festival this summer. Someone told me that its a great place to try them.

Actually, even though it's made from honey, not all mead is sweet. Check this out:

http://www.munrohoney.com/p_mead.asp

They make it in dry, medium and sweet. Take your pick!

I should point out that I look like that because its the morning after a long family wedding which included an open bar.

Usually I look more like this: http://image.examiner.com/images/blog/w ... ot_guy.jpg

Jude, I stumbled across this thread while looking for something else. You don't need much equipment to make mead. This recipe uses bread yeast and a gallon jug of spring water from the grocery store (plus honey, an orange and spices).
http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=49106

The airlock can be nothing fancier than a balloon. I made my first batch that way and it turned out fine.

I made a later batch with slightly more sophisticated equipment - wine yeast and a proper airlock - that turned out even better. It was similar to these recipes, but I made just a gallon in another jug of water from the grocery.

Don't be. :) Read the ancient mead recipe and you'll see how difficult it was. i.e., pour out water from grocery store jug of water, pour in honey, add spices and cut up orange, add yeast, shake the heck out of it, put a balloon on top and poke a hole in said balloon, put it in a dark place, wait.

I got tired of trying to find mead, too. A friend made me some many years ago and I liked it, but places that sell it are few and far between.

I didn't get any because I was at the very beginning of my trip and I knew my suitcase would get heavier and heavier as the trip progressed. And of course now I really, really regret not getting some.

If you make it, let us know if Neil Gaiman was correct in American Gods and it takes like pickled... second-hand beer.
