Now that the decade is almost over, what shall we call it?

I've heard some people suggest "The Aughts".

How about "The Ooze"? (for the '00s, with the zeroes pronounced like the letter 'O')

What do you think?

I suspect eventually we'll call them what we call the early 1900s: the early 2000s. :P

I have a question about this ~general area~

Since there was no year "zero", each decade starts with a number that ends in "1" and ends with a number that ends in "0", wouldn't that mean the year 2000 was part of the "nineties"? It doesn't sound right to me. Or maybe they refer to different things? Like, 1990 - 1999 are called the nineties, but the actual decade is composed of the years between 1991 and 2000?

Haven't had to think about this stuff since y2k haha. And since neither "09" or "2010" have gotten as much attention as the year "2012", I haven't been thinking about them either, let alone which is the start of the decade. :blackeye:

That's a good question.

For me, I always make a distinction between, say, "the nineteenth century" and "the eighteen hundreds". Since a century begins with 1 and ends with 100, and since the x-hundreds is like a meta-description of a year (a description of a description of a year number) they don't exactly coincide:
The nineteenth century: 1801 - 1900
The eighteen hundreds: 1800 - 1899
But, no one actually says "the 201st decade". Still, a decade is a decade. Starts with one and ends with ten.

Decades are tricksy things. How about we just abolish them and institute a 12-based year numbering system, sorta like clocks?

The ooze has lifted - long* live the twenty-tens! :toast:

*And when I say "long", I mean about ten years or so.

"The Noughty Ooze" - sounds like a great title for a book.

In fact, I think I just may use it for my next bestseller. Available where all fine books are sold.

And also in a few select places where trashy books are sold.

You're a year late, Jude, the "aught-something" decade ended on December 31st, 2009. :P We've been in the "tens" for over a year now!

I sit on the fence on the fractious matter of whether a decade finishes on the ninth or tenth year. I'm sure there are strengths to both sides.
BUT I hate the ambiguous new reuse of the term the nineteen hundreds, the eighteen hundreds etc for the entire century. It used to be a perfectly useful formulation for the first decade of a century. Now poor usage by television presenters who really ought to know better has hopelessly confused the term. Is nineteenth century, eighteenth century, that hard to say?

I should be moaning to the BBC about this, not you poor folks.

Dear me. I had one of those "what is the world coming to" moments this very afternoon. About a half hour ago.

My cousin laughed at me. :(

I wouldn't consider 1990 to be part of the 80s, so it doesn't make sense to me to consider 2010 to be part of the "aught-something" years. If 2000 was the first year of the "aught-somethings", the end of 2009 would mark ten years. I suppose it's all rather arbitrary, though.

I lost track of a lot of music once 2000 hit, and there hasn't been a really phenomenal movie year since 1999, so I still don't care what folks wanna call that decade. :LMAO: But hey, now that I'm right into those things again and it's a new decade, I should probably pay attention. Lemme know when it's figured out. :uhoh:

I've always found that to be sort of ridiculous, though I understand the reasoning behind it.

Although, I guess I only think that about the 00-09/10 time frame. It makes more sense when you look at another time frame. The 20's would be from 2020 to 2029, for example. So the teens actually started last year with 2010 and will go to 2019.

Okay, yeah, that makes sense. Still seems weird for the 00's.
