I'm taking recommendations. :) I have that Netflix Queue waiting for me to fill it all back up again, and when I get there I forget every movie I ever said I wanted to watch. :suspicious:

So what are your favorite classic movies that are rated G or PG? (PG-13 *might* be okay, depending on why it earned that rating.)

I just thought of one! Bringing Up Baby! <runs off>

Okay, what else?

TV shows would be okay, too, but I guess I'm thinking more of classic movies. We watched It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World a few weeks ago and got a kick out of it.

Any classic musical! I've been watching them with my parents and brothers since we were little. Our favorite was Singin' in the Rain, but there are so many good ones: Oklahoma, The Music Man, South Pacific, etc. We also loved The Pink Panther series with Peter Sellers, and the Marx Brothers movies.

Good idea. I loved West Side Story as a boy. (And as an adult! ;))

Steal away! I've got the list going on HoF, too.

And I'm already adding movies to my queue! Thanks for the suggestions so far. :)

We caught part of a Pink Panther movie the other night and laughed hysterically!

I didn't have any idea what the ratings were on movies we've seen, but I looked up a few of other people's lists online and ones we've seen and loved are:
The Princess Bride
Groundhog's Day
Galaxy Quest
War Games
Being There
The Incredibles
Hook
The Karate Kid (1984)
Ghostbusters
Iron Man 1 & 2
Raiders of the Lost Ark
All of Me
Bicentennial Man
Brewster's Millions
all the Harry Potter movies
Lawrence of Arabia
Romancing the Stone
The Truman Show
Top Gun
Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Here's a list of a lot of PG movies with links to descriptions: http://www.gazillionmovies.com/MPAA/PG.htm

I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map, And knew that somehow I could find my way back; Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too - So I stayed in the darkness with you

15 and nearly 12.

These are very good suggestions. I have not seen a lot of "classic" movies, by which I mean musicals and pre-1970s. We do enjoy them when I catch them on TV, but I just didn't know where to start.

Now I'll need to check which version of Romeo and Juliet I have in my queue. We're supposed to do it this year for school.

Don't get me wrong, the Franco Zefferelli version is great too, but I love the over-the-top-ness of the Baz Luhrman version! Really, you should watch both, starting with Zefferelli, then Baz Luhrman.

There was another Jesus Christ Superstar? I saw the Ted Neely version and liked it very much. Never heard of the other one!!!

All of the pre-2000 disney films... All of them. Especially Hunchback, The Lion King, Sleeping Beauty and Fantasia. (The original, not the 2000 remake)
Second the Goonies! That's obligatory viewing for everyone!
Charade might be a bit mature for the 12 year old, but it's good fun anyway!

Fantasia 2000 is NOT a remake! Different music. They're companion pieces.

Vison, the new version is based on Gale Edwards Stage production. Its wonderful.

I thought it might be interesting to see what G and PG movies got Oscar nominations over the years, so here they are, according to Amazon (the movie names are links to the amazon page for that movie)

Miracle on 34th Street G

1950-59
The King and I G

1960-69
True Grit G
The Sound of Music G
Mary Poppins G
Lawrence of Arabia G
Oliver! G
The Longest Day G
Funny Girl G
A man for all seasons G
The subject was Roses G
Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb PG

The Graduate PG
Sunrise At Campobello PG

1970-79
Tora! Tora! Tora! G
Fiddler on the Roof G
The Way We Were PG
Superman - The MoviePG
Love Story PG

Tommy PG
All the President's Men PG
Sounder PG
The Towering Inferno PG
Rocky PG
Butterflies are Free PG

Missing

I ran out of time and couldn't do the 90s or 2000s, but I figure most of us are fairly familiar with those anyway.
I can't vouch for most of these, since my tastes run mostly to sci fi and fantasy but the ones I have seen on this list are great!

Maria's list got me to thinking about more movies! Any Paul Newman/Robert Redford film: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting are my family's favorites. Jane Austen movies are not really classics, but they are mostly wonderful. I would highly recommend the BBC miniseries Pride and Prejudice. I am not a huge fan of the new one with Keira Knightly, but that's probably because I'm so used to the old one (which is fantastic). There are also great versions of Persuasion, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility.

Yes, we love the BBC's Pride and Prejudice.

And we love both Fantasia movies.

Maria, that's a great list!
