And that, in a nutshell, would be why I don't like him one bit.

I read Christine years ago as a teenager...

and that was the only one I 've ever read(!) - although my husband had quite a few of his novels when we met. I used to buy the latest one occasionally for him over the years, but I think he's lost interest now...

I've avoided his books all these years because I knew they were horror genre, but we got desperate for something to listen to on commutes, and the library had "Under the Dome" available, so we decided to give King a try because the premise was interesting. We liked it. Yeah, there were some icky parts that still stain my brain, but over all, it was worth the listen. Not so with "The Gunslinger". It read like a bad dream with way too many flashbacks, and the second book started out the same way. :nono: No, thanks. I'll find some other author for new audio material.

So the latest buzz is looking like Javier Bardem might play Roland. Studios like him and he's quite keen on the part apparently. His looks are a great fit but I can't see him shedding the Spanish accent and I'm not sure Roland would sound proper with that heavy accent of him.

As for the series, this is the only series I've ever read that's made me question whether there might be something I like better than LOTR. At the end of the day of course there is not, but it's a very close second for me. I sometimes have to stop reading just to digest how incredible the writing is.

I haven't listened to any of the audio books but my cousin and his wife listened to book two and said it was one of the best books he had heard. Interesting as I found book two the hardest. Three is where it really takes off for me and four where King owns your heart by the end. Wizard and glass is easily one of the top five books I've ever read.

I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map, And knew that somehow I could find my way back; Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too - So I stayed in the darkness with you

When I heard about Bardem being a choice for Roland I was worried about the accent as well. Javier Bardem is good at what he does, but Roland is big. That's like casting Pacino as Gandalf it just doesn't work.

What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping

I think his looks and talent fit the part. Javier isn't a big name actor in the style of Tom cruise rather he's made a name for himself for his talent and film choice. It is the accent though. It would be interesting to see.

I agree with you TWT and if he nails the role then I suppose it won't matter if Roland has an accent :D

So many actors learn new accents for roles that it probably doesn't matter. I'm constantly surprised to find that actors I thought were American were born somewhere else and have no trace of an accent in their roles.

But those actors you speak of can speak flawless English. Bardem doesn't.

This project was dropped by Universal so I'm pretty sure this whole thing is done unless Howard can find someone else to pick it up.
