Well, it looks like we are moving! :Q

I don't know exactly when, and I don't even know exactly where as we are keep options open for the right place but things are moving faster than expected so instead of the new year we could even move by Christmas!!

I'm really freaking out about it, I've never moved house properly before, our last home was a fully furnished flat so all we brought with us was clothes, books and the tv because it was just me and him! We now have all this 'stuff' and it needs sorting, packing and moving ........ I can feel my chest tightning just thinking about it!

This is a good thing though, I have to keep reminding myself, we have out grown our 2 bedroom masionette and our new place will have a garden, something my children have never had so even a small one will be fantastic :D

Guess I should really start sorting things now hmmm? Any tips anyone has to make the whole thing run more smoothly?

Starting as soon as possible is my first tip. :D

And then I'd say get rid of as much stuff as possible. Pack up now what you don't absolutely need, so that when it gets closer to moving day there is less to pack up.

And remember that you can't pack a refrigerator box entirely with books.

It is stressful, but you'll get through it! :)

Well, I only just moved, so um.. uh...

Actually I have no idea. Just do everything I didn't do and you should be okay.

Getting rid of stuff is a good idea. Accumulate boxes, not too big to carry. When you fill them, fill them full so they stack without collapsing. Think about the order of things being unpacked. Labelling boxes if you have a lot can save time. Have some things that are soft malleable shapes like plastic bags with clothes that can fill awkward spaces. When you get there get everything out of boxes soon or they will stay there years. And junk expands to fill the space available if you let it.
Good luck.

All good advice!

I'm a big fan of labeling! I had a code for each room. (It wasn't rocket science. It was, you know, LR for Living Room or MBR for Master Bedroom.) And I listed at least some of the items in each box. You can get very detailed, but I just listed the general idea of what was in there.

Have a packing party right before you move, and an unpacking party right after you move. Friends usually work for pizza and beer or pop. :) YMMV.

(We switched houses, so that presented some unique challenges. Really, it was like moving long distance even though it was really just to the next town. We couldn't move a little at a time, and we couldn't clean or paint the new house before we moved in. We had to throw in a painting party between the packing and unpacking party.)

Thanks everyone :)

Just out of interest, does anyone know if i'm allowed to just leave stuff behind?

I had a dining table that is too small for us (4 places, 5 people) so don't really want to take it with us, plus a couple of other bits that arn't really worth taking but not enough to make a trip to the dump??

I'm not sure if the house will be stripped when we leave - when we arrived even all the carpets had been ripped up although not sure if it was by old tenants or not - but as when we came here we had hardly any furniture, to find a table etc already there would have been handy.
What do you think? Get rid or leave it? They arn't really 'good' enough to donate and as they are big items people don't want to come and collect.

I've started collecting boxes and chucking stuff that I know we won't need now - old tins of paint and wood for example, I know I am a typical Cancerian but jeez why do I hold on to these things?!

Andy (my beloved) is in shock or denial, he doesn't like change and big upheavals so is being as useful as a chocolate teapot  Ah well, I am woman, hear me roar etc :P

East Anglians from my part of the world are, shall we say thrifty. The previous owner of my house took the lightbulbs when he moved. There is the story of an old boy popping round a friend's cottage to find him stripping the wallpaper.
" How do Hinry? Yew a redeceratin?"
"Blahst no boy! Um a movin."

I don't know about England, but you can sometimes get away with leaving stuff in America. It's usually good form to ask the new buyers, though. If you're renting, I have no idea what to tell you. We have always had wonderful luck with putting things at the curb with a big "FREE" sign on them. That makes me happy to see stuff taken.

My washing machine's motor burned out a few weeks ago. As it was close to 20 years old, we moved it to the curb.

It was gone the next day! Apparently, people cruise the roads looking for large appliances to sell as scrap metal! :Q Who would have thunk? :D

Yes! Apparently, if you're so inclined, able to lift stuff, and have a pickup truck for hauling things, you can make some decent money with scrap metal. I am just happy to have someone take it off my hands, and I'm glad they're getting some money in addition to things being recycled.

You can leave stuff on the curb and it will get taken away by the 'little green trucks' BUT if your caught doing it you could get into real trouble  Which means late night sneaking about ........ I might ask around and see what others have done because I don't want to leave stuff behind then get a bill or something! We have already damaged a door so will probably get a bill for that as it is

Sorry if I'm boring everyone with this  i'm just a little over excited about it all and a little over anxious as well!

We always save scrap metal and are in the process of filling a trailer now to take to the salvage yard and get rid of it. We usually make enough money from selling the metal to buy a load of gravel to take back on the return trip for our driveway.

I like the symmetry of that.

Well recently been informed that anything we leave we will be charged for its removal, and that includes carpets! So shall most probably be freecycling a bunch of stuff and taking the rest to the skip.

Also found out that will be charged for any 'damage' so have arranged for a glazer to come look at one of the windows as it will be cheaper to just sort it now than wait to be sent a bill by the landlord!

This moving lark is a pain in the butt I tell you, and we havn't even got a house yet!!!

Hang in there! It is a pain, but it will be worth it! :)

Is the "skip" the same as the dump?

Try asking on Freecycle (or similar) for unwanted moving boxes. People who have paid for a removal company to do the leg-work will usually have a stash of them once they've unpacked. We passed all ours on to my sister when she moved recently.

If the table and things are in decent condition then a charity will probably welcome them as a donation. Most will come and collect as well. A local church charity took our old sofa. Alternatively, try ebay (get the buyer to collect) and see if you can make a few ££?

No, I actually ment to say 'Tip' which is the same as the dump  A Skip is a big, usually yellow, metal bin type thing which you use to dump all your rubbish/building materials in and then the skip truck takes it to the dump I think ..... never actually used one though so may be wrong there!

Leoba - I was thinking of doing that thanks :) But no the table is covered in felt pen and has had the varnish scrubbed off! Ruddy kids hmm  :D

Have someone coming on Saturday to try and replace the window and they only want the cost of the glass which will save us some money, so far so good :)
