Since I'm not going to see it again (well, maybe someday if I catch it on free-to-air TV sometime while TV remote surfing), I've said all I had to say about it. Sorry.

Somewhat related: BBC article on a man who could only see in 2D suddenly had his brain rewired to see in 3D during a movie (Hugo)
Quote:
But this wasn’t just movie magic. When he stepped out of the cinema, the world looked different. For the first time, Bridgeman saw a lamppost standing out from the background. Trees, cars and people looked more alive and more vivid than ever. And, remarkably, he’s seen the world in 3D ever since that day. “Riding to work on my bike, I look into a forest beside the road and see a riot of depth, every tree standing out from all the others,” he says. Something had happened. Some part of his brain had awakened.

I just haven't felt a need to post hobbit reviews. Maybe that's the advantage of living with someone who's equally obsessed? :D :D We've seen it twice now (both times in 3D) and are hoping to squeeze in another (2D) viewing this month as a local friend has offered to babysit.

I am still swooning for the delicious Richard Armitage (even under all that hair).

He is swoon-worthy. :D But I'm crushing more on Martin Freeman.

By the way, why wasn't Arwen in the film? Shouldn't she have been in Rivendell? (along with a twenty-something-year-old Aragorn?)

Nope. She was in Lothlorien at the time. But even if she had been in Rivendell, its a big place. We don't have to see everyone. I'm with the guys who said that the Star Wars prequels tied everything in so much that it just made the world/universe feel small.

Just wondering - is it against copyright law if you upload something from History of Middle-Earth but don't expect to make any money out of it?

Just about to order the DVD, which comes out in less than two weeks! :Q

Is the blu-ray going to have the same crystal-clear definition of the high frame rate film? Does that technology exist yet for home viewing?

I finally got to watch the blu-ray last night. Some new questions:
  1. With the revised film chronology, since Bilbo only gets around to writing his memoirs on the party day (the same day he disappears), there's no way that Frodo could have read it before he goes off on his own adventure. How much does he know about Bilbo's adventure?
In fact, he almost certainly read Bilbo's account only when he returned, and then wrote his own continuation immediately after.
  2. Gandalf has only just learned of what's going on in Dol Guldur; consequently he hasn't yet rescued Thráin.
Where did he get the key and the map?

I assume he knows all about it from Bilbo's oral accounts. Bilbo says as much in FOTR.

Possibility 1: Gandalf is not just now learning about Dol Guldur. He's either playing his cards close to his chest, or simply didn't understand the magnitude of what he was dealing with when he found Thrain there (perhaps he thought the ring-addled Thrain was the only inhabitant).

Possibility 2: Thrain gave him the map and key when he first set out in case he didn't come back. Gandalf will discover what happened to him in one of the upcoming films instead of many years ago.

Possibility 3: Peter Jackson didn't quite think this one through.

It wouldn't be the first time

Uh-oh... I just thought of another plot hole: Gandalf's remark in FOTR "You haven't aged a day" directly contradicts the scene in The Hobbit where Bilbo daydreams on his doorstep and we step back 60 years in time to see him portrayed by a completely different actor.

Gandalf is clearly supposed to have been away for quite some time, but I doubt very much that he's been absent for the entire 60 years. He struck up that friendship with Frodo at some point, after all.

Okay, fair point.

So: he ages between his return journey and the last visit of Gandalf, then doesn't age any more between Gandalf's last visit and the party.

Still doesn't make sense
