I will probably not get a Kindle either. Reading off of a computer screen too much is hard on the eyes!

And, I do not think *E*'s mural is vandalism in the least! I think it's beautiful. But I am not one of those people who considers books to be some sort of sacred thing to be kept pristine. The importance of a book is not the book itself but the content within. As long as a book is still readable, I could care less if it's spine has been painted.

Oh man, time for bed. I totally saw that image as bricks painted to look like books, and not the other way around.

Damn you, Kansas City Library! ;)

Kindle isn't a "computer screen". That's the whole point of it, and other similar devices that use electronic paper and ink.

e-Readers like the Kindle are designed to look like reading a book. They are not backlit like a computer screen, and they do not use projective light, it uses reflective light, just like paper. As such, it is designed to be easy on the eyes, unlike a computer screen. (Another advantage of this approach is that they can be used in full sunlight without glare.)

All the same, I do not think I will ever buy one. I'll just get my books where I get them now. The library, and browsing bookstore for hours. ;)

I thought they looked like the kind of screens that alarm clocks and digital watches use. That's cool.

Lali, your library looks very vibrant and outreaching. You are right, it's a great model for other library services to aspire to. I love the scupltures, particularly the boy and girl reading back to back - isn't that similar to a famous library mural - is it the Norman Rockwell one in New Rochelle?
I don't know, actually. It's a nice sculpture. The stack of books sculpture is the one at the library by my house. (I prefer the boy and girl.)

And I think Estel has a very good point about children and books. I can't imagine babies and toddlers playing with Kindles. :D And I'd hate to see preschoolers and young children looking at a screen when they could be holding a book in their hands. (I consider many of those books works of art. Some of those books have tactile aspects to them beyond just mere paper, but, even if they don't, the artwork can be absolutely gorgeous or engaging.) I don't have any problem with Kindles; I think they're rather cool, actually, but I don't know that they'll replace paper books.

We'll see! :D

Oh definitely...children's books these days are designed to stimulate several senses. I love my kids' books that have textured, embossed pages, and pop-up, 3D pictures, and lots of lift-up flaps or envelopes to open. Sometimes you get holographic pictures set into the pages...and even "scratch and sniff" patches! Book illustrations are a passion of mine, and it's that, along with the quality of the binding and cover design which turns a reading book into a work of art and an object of beauty. [ img ]

It's nice to see the younger brother of the Blue Man Group getting some love. They all thought he had no talent.

Not exactly a library, but a great design for a book storage room:

With a more practical design, I wouldn`t have to ask that. ;)

Human Library returns to Ottawa Saturday

Not anything to do with the Kansas City Public Library, but I thought this was an interesting idea:
Quote:
The event, to be held Saturday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at five branches of the library, allows people to check out a person for a 20-minute conversation.
Is this unique to Ottawa, or do other libraries do this as well?

That's odd. But also kind of interesting.
