I don't want them to be eaten - they eat flies, after all :toast:

I just want them to do their webs on something other than plants that I'm going to eat.

Well, right, my thoughts exactly, though I didn't actually write them all down. You don't really want something eating the spiders unless you just have an overabundance and need to cull the herd, so to speak.

I wonder if spraying soap or something like that would deter them from webbing up* your plants.

*New term. Feel free to use liberally.

Soap will probably kill them.

I've been killing Japanese beetles in my garden the past week by grabbing them with a gloved hand and dropping them into a bucket of soapy water. The little monsters were eating the silks off my corn! And skeltonizing my sweet potatoe leaves. :x

Then we found jillions of fuzzy caterpillars starting to strip the pecan tree of leaves. We sprayed them down with soapy water -- the ones we could reach-- and hope they all die.

I use a plastic tub, half full of soapy water, and its lid for the Japanese beetles. I put the open bucket of water underneath the branch, hit them from above with the lid, and they fall in and drown.

They're making a mess of our peaches, though. I don't think we'll have any worth eating this year. And they love the grapevines, cherry trees and roses, too.

For the spiders, I think you need a Ring of Power and a small, Elf-made sword.

Well, for a while there, I thought my tomatoes might stand a chance this year, it was so sunny. But we are back to the summer pattern of overcast mornings and afternoons, with a few hours of cool sunlight in between. I'll take it over the roasting oven that other places get, but my tomatoes disagree.

I didn't grow tomatoes this year, being under doctor's orders to avoid members of the nightshade family. I do miss them.....

I left the bucket of soapy beetles out in the garden the first day, and when I came back the next day 90% of them were gone. :Q I think a bird was taking them- because I put the next batch in the garage and they all stayed dead in the bucket.

This tree grows near my house:

Does anyone recognize it? Is the fruit edible? And, most importantly, can I make jam from it?

It looks like a crabapple, possibly. If so, you might be able to make jam from it, but you don't want to try to eat them as is. They are extremely sour/bitter. (They'll suck all of the saliva right out of your entire mouth.)

They're more of a dark purple than is shown by this flash-picture. There are crabapple trees up the street from this one, but they're not the same colour at all.

I wondered about cherries too, but they're not quite the right colour for that either.

So my backyard is kind of long and narrow - it gets sun, but any given spot gets only a couple of hours a day as the sun passes over.

My plants are healthy, but they just don't seem to grow much. So I was wondering - if I could set up a series of outdoor mirrors to strategically redirect the sun, I could arrange for the plants to get a full day of direct sunlight.

Does this sound practical? Has it been done before?

... and would your neighbors think you're nuts? ;)

spoken, of course, by the woman who used to entertain the neighbors by chasing young rabbits out of the fenced backyard, in hopes they would learn to fear the area.

btw, spiders sometimes seem to get the hint if you hose down their webs with plain water (and destroy the web) repeatedly. Provided they have somewhere else to go, of course. I do that when the giant orb weaver (?) spiders insist on putting their huge webs someplace awkward.

And did it work?

Worked on both.
Read that as you like. :D

I wonder if chives deter bugs. The one basil plant I have that shares a pot with some chives does not have a single hole on its leaves. The other three plants look like some insect has been helping itself.

Note to self: next year, grow chives with everything.

So if I plant clover, can it stand up to large amounts of dog urine?

The leaves of my blackcurrant bush are covered with little green bugs. Could they be aphids?

Could they be responsible for the bush having almost no fruit, even though the leaves look perfectly healthy?
