How many people these days can afford to hand money to everyone they meet? My guess is, not very many.

I tip waiters/waitresses, but I would much prefer that the establishment paid them a decent wage and adjusted the prices accordingly.

I tip waiters/waitresses. I tip my hairdresser. I tip hotel maids (usually). That may not be an exhaustive list, but that's all I can think of right now.
Mine is waiters/waitresses, hairdresser, cab drivers and the person who brings your bags up, on the very rare occasion we stay in a nicer hotel (if we can't avoid them and carry our own bags :) ).

I have to admit, I'm pretty tired of being asked to tip all and sundry just for doing their jobs. And all too often, the people I think would really deserve a tip are the ones who wouldn't take it.

I really wish US employers would get with the program and pay real wages, and charge real prices already. I certainly do not expect to tip anyone for basically pouring me a cup of coffee.
It's not a personal service.

I wish that would happen, too, but I'm not sure it would work - the tipping culture is too ingrained in the US. I suspect most people would continue to tip, not to look "cheap."

So what is the protocol for tipping at a self-service buffet? The usual 15 - 20 %?

We never tip more than a dollar per person eating when we go to a buffet. I don't know what the norm is, but that's what we do. Since one server tends 10-15 tables, I figure that ought to bring their hourly rate up to something reasonable.

This site says 10%. I guess we are doing better than that when our meals cost under $10.

Hmmm... from your link:

Cafes and coffeehouses -Typically, it's appropriate at cafés and coffeehouses to contribute 10 to 15 percent to the countertop tip jar

The problem with those sites is, they ask people who depend on receiving tips. There is a bit of a bias there. ;)

I only tip at self-service places if I have, in fact, received some service.

Ohhhh... maybe that's why the wait person at the buffet always looks disappointed when we refuse their offer to bring us rolls. Maybe next time I'll reassure them..."We'll still tip!"

Of course, that would actually mean talking to them...

I'll probably just continue to surprise them with a tip later for their non service. They do bring drinks and clear used plates.

So here's a question I'd really like feedback on:

Suppose some enterprising restaurant tried to fight the tipping culture; they pay their staff a decent, competitive wage, and they accordingly adjust the menu prices upward. They advertise this fact heavily, and ask their customers not to tip, and advise the staff to refuse tips when offered. They have their policy displayed throughout the restaurant, so that the customers will not feel awkward about not tipping.

Would you be more or less likely to eat there? Assuming, of course, that the quality of food and service is on par with other local restaurants that do it the traditional way.

I don't know that I would go out of my way to eat there, but I would certainly not avoid it either. I think it's the right way to run business, and how most of the world does it anyway.

I would go there.

Are you opening a restaurant? :)

Add in locally-sourced food and innovative recipes, and it'll be a hit!

OMG I would support the bejesus out of that restaurant!! The whole tipping culture has driven me nuuuuts since I was old enough to spend my own money. Very early I tried to boycott tipping but it's wildly socially unacceptable and nobody gave a damn about why I did it. Because if enough people did it restaurants would be forced to just pay their damn staff a decent wage!! Why am I expected to pay your employee's wages for you!! Just pay them for doing their jobs like every other workplace!! :rage: :x :bang: :x :x :rage:

It looks like I'm not the only one who thinks it's a good idea:

No-tip restaurants fight to gain traction
Quote:
Referring to tipping as a “broken business model,” David Jones, owner of the Smoke and Water in Parksville, B.C, told the Vancouver Province that when his restaurant opens up this June, customers will not be allowed to tip.

He will instead increase the menu prices by 18 per cent and jack up the average wage servers and cooks make. His servers will receive between $20 and $24 an hour while cooks will earn $16 to $18 an hour.
