While I agree with the rant on general principles, there's just one tiny problem... :)

Apparently, some wait staff can do rather well on the current system, especially at high end restaurants. That's one reason students give for taking waitress/ waiter jobs, as opposed to other things they could do part-time to help out the finances. Plus the flexibility in hours, of course.

At one time, I also heard that you only had to declare the standard amount (15%?) as tips, and (depending on your honesty) the rest of your tips were pretty much undeclared to the government for tax purposes. Not sure if that's still the system.

So I don't know if the people in the restaurant/ tip dependent jobs actually want things to change.

I don't agree with every point this article makes but I thought it was worth the read:

There's also a great article by Michael Lewis linked to from your article that touches on the subject that spawned this thread in the first place:
Quote:
No lawful behavior in the marketplace is as disturbing to me as the growing appeals for gratuities. Every gentle consumer of cappuccinos will know what I'm getting at: Just as you hand your money over to the man behind the counter, you notice a plastic beggar's cup beside the cash register. ''We Appreciate Your Tips,'' it reads in blue ink scrawled across the side with calculated indifference. The young man or woman behind the counter has performed no especially noteworthy service. He or she has merely handed you a $2 muffin and perhaps a ruinous cup of coffee and then rung them up on the register. Yet the plastic cup waits impatiently for an expression of your gratitude. A dollar bill or two juts suggestively over the rim -- no doubt placed there by the person behind the counter. Who would tip someone a dollar or more for pouring them a cup of coffee? But you can never be sure. The greenbacks might have been placed there by people who are more generous than yourself. People whose hearts are not made of flint.

People who put jars like that out there never put them out empty. There's always a bit of coin or paper money to encourage other people to add to it and not feel guilty. That's common knowledge, isn't it?

That's true, but they put it out there to make you think that other people left big tips ahead of you.

An interesting article on the mechanics/ laws of the tipping system in the US. Looks like it varies by state.

The "I'm not on the menu" campaign

Here's a negative aspect of tipping that I hadn't thought about until now: waitresses are far less likely to stand up to unwanted sexual attention if their income depends on tips from customer.
Quote:
“When you are a woman living off tips, you are forced to tolerate whatever a customer might do to you, how they touch you, treat you, or talk to you. Because the customer is always right. Because the customer pays your income, not your employer,” explains Saru Jayaraman, co-founder and co-director of ROC-United.
It's time to get rid of this stupid practice altogether and pay them a decent living wage.

Whether that would help matters depends on the employer being ready to stand up for his staff. If a woman can't walk away from a crappy job, she may feel just as trapped on a salary, and instead of collecting tips she'll have to put up with the same harassment and leave all extra income to the boss.

This is the right way of soliciting self-service tips

I agree - despite my stance against self-service tipping, I might be tempted to throw a few coins into the cups.

In fact, here's a sure-fire way to get me to tip: have two cups, one for Lord of the Rings, and the other for Twilight, and have the Twilight one more full than the Lord of the Rings one. I'd be unable to resist filling up the LOTR one.

The poet Ogden Nash expresses his views on all this stuff:
Ogden Nash wrote:
Suppose He Threw It In your Face

Please don't anybody ask me to decide anything, I do not know a nut from a meg,
Or which came first, the lady or the tiger, or which came next, the chicken or the egg.
It takes a man of vision
To make a decision,
And my every memory
Is far too dilemmary.
I am, alas, to be reckoned
With the shortstop who can't decide whether to throw to first or second,
Nor can I decide whether to put, except after c,
E before i, or i before e.
But where this twilight mind really goes into eclipse
Is in the matter of tips.
I stand stricken before the triple doom,
Whether, and How Much, and Whom.
Tell me, which is more unpleasant,
The look from him who is superior to a tip and gets it, or from him who isn't and doesn't?
I had rather be discovered playing with my toes in the Boston Aquarium
Than decide wrongly about an honorarium.
Oh, to dwell forever amid Utopian scenery
Where hotels and restaurants and service stations are operated by untippable unoffendable machinery.

I still stand by my rule - I tip people who fetch or carry for me in a non-incidental fashion, or whom I need to bribe into not messing up my stuff. Or people who provide service that doesn't usually merit tips but in a way that pleases and amuses me. I left a dollar at the copy shop once because I found their handmade signs to be hilarious, like a WISYWIG sticker on the mirror.

Contrary to much of what I've said in this thread, in these days I think people who have to work in a public-facing role should receive some extra compensation. So I think I'll be tipping at the self-service counter as long as this pandemic lasts.

I think that's a nice idea! I've been tipping even more lately.

We get a lot of deliveries during lockdown, and I always tip the delivery guys/gals. It's a job that pays pittance and they're exposed to greater risk now.

It's tricky though, because I generally operate cash-less these days, so the family scrambles to check the bottom of bags and pockets to gather sufficient change for a delivery.
