Yeah, I think the original BBC radio play was the best of all the versions of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

Too bad they ended on a cliffhanger :x I think another season must have been planned, but other things got in the way.

Yeah, the Radio Play was the original format of Hitchikers, the books came after.

There's the full cast BBC Radio Plays which I adore, and then there's a sort of half way house where you have a full cast reading of an abridged (or unabridged) version of the novel, with sound effects sometimes. My least favourite is unabridged readings, with the sole exception of Martin Shaw's unabridged reading of The Silmarillion, which I believe is the best way to approach that particular book. Reading a book is a very different experience to listening to one read, and in those cases I prefer an abridged reading, like Tony Robinson's versions of the Pratchett novels.

I have a pretty large collection of all types, from the full cast BBC LotR, to the small cast Big Finish Audio Productions of Doctor Who, to the Philip Pullman novels with full cast (both radio play and unabridged cast reading) to the Terry Pratchett ones. I'm happy to share if anyone is interested. I've a pretty extensive collection.

Incidentally, I believe the radio play of Good Omens is currently available on the BBC player.

PS: and in the first episode, the two policemen, Neil and Terry, are voiced by the actual Neil and Terry.

I think you did, too.

It's good. The inherent problem with adapting something written by Pratchett is that the best parts are often in the narrative, which doesn't make it into the play. Like the story of Sister Mary Loquacious.
Quote:
“She’d stopped reading the kind of women’s magazine that talked about romance and knitting and started reading the kind of women’s magazine that talked about orgasms, but apart from making a mental note to have one if ever the occasion presented itself she dismissed them as only romance and knitting in a new form.”
And then she started reading magazines about investments.

My reserved copy of the first season of Anne has come in and I've just watched the first episode.

It's a lot darker than the book - and they've added and changed a lot.

It was dark but good, though, I thought. I have not watched any other episodes, however, iirc. It's still in my queue on Netflix, and I just haven't been in the mood to give it a go.

There are only 7 episodes, and I have three weeks in which to watch them.

I'm still a bit puzzled. I was alternating between "I love this!" and "Why did they change that?"

The actress who plays Anne is excellent, though. (She's Irish, but her Canadian accent is perfect!)

I liked her, too! I thought she resembled the Anne in my head more so than Megan Follows. (Megan was a little too pretty, imo.)

I've finished the whole first season. It gets less dark as time goes on and Anne gets used to her new life.

I liked it a lot. There's a lot added and a lot changed, so you need to put your purist expectations aside. I can understand why so much was added: the character who plays Anne is closer to Anne's real age than any previous adaptation, so they need to pad things out. Remember, at the end of the first book she's ready to start her teaching career, so presumably that will be a few years / seasons in the future.

I see from IMDB that they've just started Season 2. I'll have to wait until the DVD comes out, presumably near the end of the year.

Any of you Netflixy people watching it?

I have been binge-watching this for the past couple days. It is tremendous! I am nearly done with season 2, so I'm going to be sad when that ends. Of course, they have gone way off script, but I still love it. I think they've done a wonderful job of capturing aspects of Anne's personality that the previous movie didn't touch on and the books only alluded to.

I'm very glad to hear the 2nd season is good as well! I do remember that season 1 ended with a sticky situation that wasn't from the books, so I wonder how they'll resolve that.

I imagine that the DVD will be available in a few months...

Well, they've clearly taken a lot of liberties already.

Anyone else watching Season 3? They seem to have abandoned the book entirely. The other two had episodes from the book interspersed with their own story line, but this one doesn't at all. I think it's the weakest of the three.

I say this being only slightly more than half-way through. Maybe it gets better?

Is this "Anne with an E"? My daughter (16) is addicted to it, and has rewatched it multiple times.

Yes, that's the one. Did she read the book as well?
