Last night we had freezing fog. The trees and tall weeds were gorgeous with ice this morning.

I was wrong - winter storm applies to Southern California, where heavy rains caused mud slides in areas of recent wildfires. We are just having rain.

Most years, my tomatoes are dead by November and I pull them up. This year, not only did I pick a few ripe tomatoes this weekend, I have new flowers coming in.

Eta: and now my weather app says dry weather will continue, and my window says it's pouring. Who do I believe?

It was 70F/ 21C here yesterday! :Q We were working outside in T shirts. :flowerthrow:

Today winter coats are required again. *sigh* It's really not bad at 41F/ 5C, though.

My husband planned on taking polar grade gear to Chicago, but it's in the 50s there! It's supposed to be around freezing tomorrow. I hope it won't end in roads nicely iced at night and melting in the morning, with zero friction. I remember that part of winter very well. I think I still have sore spots on my rear from falling over on the way to school!

That's the first time I ever remember a thunderstorm in January.

Bud was seriously unimpressed :suspicious:

We had thunderstorms, too, and hail! It was weird!

Hello people.
As some of you know I am now in the Pacific Northwest area sort of, we get the storms coming in from Washington/Oregon area. Last year we had record snow, this year it's been weird, lots of rain but not much snow. Fire season should be no fun at all. Hopefully the crops will be okay too, who needs expensive taters precious?

Surely taters aren't planted yet! Isn't it too cold?

We've had one of our expected heatwaves when the temperature doesn't drop below the mid 20s overnight. Makes it hard work when one doesn't have air-con, which we don't.
Fans work well even with temperatures in the mid 40s, as long as there is adequate drop at night to cool the house, so we can keep it to 25C - 28C indoors. We sleep with doors and windows open - which I enjoy, as balmy nights are a delight - but if there's no overnight drop, the house just keeps getting hotter.
Last night dropped to 29C in my locality, so today the house is up at 33C. Unpleasant and enervating.

Is air conditioning not the norm in Australia?

In the north, absolutely; in the south, where summers have usually been milder ans don't last 6-7 months of the year, it's probably a 6/4 split. Home owners are more likely to have aircon, renters less likely.
We own our own home but I'd rather not have aircon because it's so energy hungry. We get by with fans most of the summer because we have lots of windows and shading and great air flow. We probably get 5-6 days in the whole of summer which are really too hot indoors. It seems an extravagant expense fir 5-6 days a year.

Same here - in my nanoclimate few houses have AC, although 30 miles inland most do. But we are now getting more heat waves.

That is entirely too hot inside, though. Yuck. :( I hope you can find some ways to stay cool.

I grew up without air conditioning and tend to make it through most of the summer here without turning it on. I have it on at times to help with humidity more than temperature, but it's the norm here to have AC.

Sunday was gorgeous—sunny and warm, about 50F/10C. Yesterday, it snowed, and today is 23F/-5C. :(

Ah well. I enjoyed the brief respite and got outside and walked for about 2 hours.

When I lived in California's Central Valley, we did the same (well, windows open at least). It cooled down enough at night that you could manage pretty well. We had air conditioning, but as poor grad students, we rarely turned it on.

The type of heat matters for me, though. I can go for a bike ride in hot, dry heat without feeling too miserable - the breeze you generate helps a lot. If it's hot and muggy, though, I'm miserable without air conditioning - even doing very little.

Yes! And there is no dry heat here in Ohio. It's all muggy heat.
