It's supposed to get down to -5F / -20.5C tomorrow night. :( My poor cows. I wish I had a big warm barn for them. Or even a big cold barn full of deep bedding. Instead, they get to spend the night out in a field sleeping on the remains of big round bales that they didn't finish eating.

They'll huddle together for warmth, so they'll survive. it just doesn't get this cold very often, so there's no justification for a big expensive barn. Our barn is a big hollow arched building with open ends mostly filled with hay. There's room for the cows to crowd in on one end and get out of snow or rain, but it isn't comfortable. They prefer sleeping out in the field to the barn.

I don't worry about the sheep, they have thick wool coats on and don't ever seem to feel the cold. The cows, though. My oldest and favorite cow has a very thin coat. I hate not being able to do something to make her more comfortable.

My son is about to experience a really hard core winter. I used live in a place where temperatures consistently stayed below freezing for a couple months, but this is something else. I've never even seen -30, and then it's going to be 40s over the weekend.

It's nice to have Lake Michigan upwind to keep you "warm" :D

It's not so nice to have it repeatedly dump a foot of snow on you. :x

That lake really makes a difference!

It was negative 9 this morning, even colder than forecast. My three oldest cows were in the barn this morning, while the other ones with thicker coats were already out at the bales eating hay.

If they stand in just the right place, they are out of the wind, which is apparently more important than taking in calories. :(

You get older, you get wiser. ;)
I once spent more than half an hour outside when it was -60F or -70, windchill included. I was young. And I made sure not to repeat the experience. Even though I was active (and so warmer than just standing around) and well dressed for it, I had to keep turning my back to the breeze, or the bit of exposed skin around my eyes would feel like it was starting to freeze. It seemed to take forever to warm up afterward.

Frelga, how is your son?

I read that a college student in Iowa froze to death, but they haven't released the details yet.

I saw. :( Poor kid was minutes from his dorm, apparently.

My son's classes were canceled for two days. He did have to work Thursday night but by then temperatures were above 0F. I think he stepped out briefly and noped back home, but he acted like he's ready to cross the Antarctica.

He'll be in Israel this summer and he's pretty sure he'll miss -30 when it's 120F.

Ottawa broke an all-time record for January snow.

Even though we're only on the 4th day of February, if this continues we'll break a February record too. I'm hoping that these last few days were only a January hangover, though...

With all the snow melting, things are terribly squishy on our farm. I made the mistake of wearing regular shoes instead of knee high rubber boots yesterday, because I thought things were firming up finally.... and when I stepped on what appeared to be a solid spot, I sank two inches into the muck. Yuck. Back to the rubber boots. *sigh*

I wish all this precipitation would happen in the summer when it's needed!

Huge winds tonight in Ottawa - driving home I saw signposts and traffic lights flapping in the wind like tree branches. And occasionally my car would catch a sudden gust of wind and feel like it was swerving out of control.

Well, I'm home safely, and I'm not going anywhere tonight. Not even out to walk the dogs (sorry guys!).

We had the tail end of Storm Erik these past couple of days...saw there was a tree down last night a few streets away that had fallen across a parked car. I t was dark and the street was cordoned off so I don't know if there was any damage to property as well.

We had those winds the other night, and Maria's rains, too. (I can't remember the exact order. I just know it was very rainy and floody and warm, around 60F, and then it was very windy, possibly all on the same day.) Now it is bitterly cold again.

Tonight we're getting the worst of both worlds - high winds like the ones I complained about last Friday, but on top of that we're getting 30 - 40 cm of snow dumped on us. School is cancelled tomorrow, and police are advising everyone to skip non-essential travel.

Most likely everyone who can will be working from home tomorrow.

Who else got that terrible wind this weekend? Jude, is it upon you now?

We have a blowing snow warning now.

Driving to work this morning, there was one stage where I could feel the wind trying to push my car into the next lane.

Apparently Ottawa got off lightly. I heard of a 18-car pileup just east of us, and a 70-car pileup (!) west of us.

Check out the pictures in this article :Q

According to the CBC, the extreme cold is the only thing that's keeping us from yet another huge snowstorm. I guess I'm willing to pay that price.

Don't forget to think of the firefighters in weather like this. This morning, Ottawa fire crews are battling a huge blaze in the Hintonburg area. At this temperature, they're concerned that the hoses could explode at any moment. Also, the river of water freezes the moment it hits the street. Cars parked nearby are now totally enclosed in a block of ice.
