It's supposed to get down to -5F / -20.5C tomorrow night. My poor cows. I wish I had a big warm barn for them. Or even a big cold barn full of deep bedding. Instead, they get to spend the night out in a field sleeping on the remains of big round bales that they didn't finish eating.
They'll huddle together for warmth, so they'll survive. it just doesn't get this cold very often, so there's no justification for a big expensive barn. Our barn is a big hollow arched building with open ends mostly filled with hay. There's room for the cows to crowd in on one end and get out of snow or rain, but it isn't comfortable. They prefer sleeping out in the field to the barn.
I don't worry about the sheep, they have thick wool coats on and don't ever seem to feel the cold. The cows, though. My oldest and favorite cow has a very thin coat. I hate not being able to do something to make her more comfortable.
