IIRC, they were always Nigerians. Just not necessarily Nigerian princes with a fortune to share.

Here's a bit of charming whimsy.

Who is putting these mysterious medallions around Berkeley?
Quote:
There is a person out there with a sly sense of humor, a way with words, a working knowledge of Berkeley history and a desire to impart pithy observations.

He or she or they has been going around town the past few months affixing round metal medallions with clever sayings to sidewalks around Central Berkeley.

“Welcome to Berkeley. Now stop doing that,” reads one medallion nailed into the sidewalk near the Berkeley/Oakland border. The other half of the medallion says: “Welcome to Oakland. We missed you.”

Another states: “On this spot, ….David Kravitz finally thought of a witty rejoinder after that dreadful dinner party a week earlier. Mr. Kravitz had wished to say at the time, ‘Some suffer in silence, but others make everyone suffer each time they open their mouth’ to that loudmouthed Mrs. Pearlman.”

Cool mystery. Odd they can't spell Shattuck Ave, though, for someone familiar with things like Strawberry Creek being underground after it runs through campus. Or maybe they're just a poor speller?

I'd be curious if they've commemorated the Naked Guy or the "Orange Man." Might suggest how long he/she has been living there.

Not that I remember. There's a lot of offbeat stuff in Berkeley.

Those are very funny! I adore stuff like that. :D

I've been putting googly eyes on random things at work. :D They are making people laugh, and I am highly amused.

Inkling, I saw that!

Speaking of the saw, have you seen that video of tree trimming with a twenty-foot saw suspended from a helicopter? It is very safe, according to this article, which used the word "safety" on average twice per sentence.

As a result of the early skepticism, the owners of Aerial Solutions Inc. (ASI) faced an uphill climb in selling the concept.
You don't say.

Here's the tweet with the video.

Not a career for me! :)

I enjoyed this story from The Atlantic. It's about 2 women who became friends when they were trapped at the airport during a crisis in Turkey:

Quote:
Whom Would You Trust If You Were Trapped in the Airport During a Coup?
Quote:
Every week, The Friendship Files features a conversation between The Atlantic’s Julie Beck and two or more friends, exploring the history and significance of their relationship.

This week she talks with two women—one American, one French—who were supposed to be on the same flight out of Turkey on the day of the July 2016 military coup, but who got trapped in Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport overnight instead. After a chance meeting, they implemented a buddy system to stay safe that night, taking care of each other and doing their best to keep their spirits up. Every summer since, they’ve taken a trip together to commemorate the anniversary of the coup, and their meeting....

I 'stormed' Area 51 and it was even weirder than I imagined
Nevada
Quote:
In the middle of the Nevadan desert, outside a secretive US military airstrip, I found the world’s strangest social media convention.

Dozens of young, good-looking, often costumed people were running around filming each other with semi-professional video rigs. They were YouTube and Instagram stars – or, more often, aspiring stars – here to “storm” Area 51 for the benefit of their followers and free the aliens held captive within. Or at least film themselves talking about it.

Joining them was a ragged army of hundreds of stoners, UFO buffs, punk bands, rubberneckers, European tourists, people with way too much time on their hands, and meme-lords in Pepe the Frog costumes – all here because of the Internet, the ironic and the earnest alike, for a party at the end of the earth...
It seems it ended up breaking into two parties, one near Area 51 and the other in Las Vegas, plus an opportunistic promotion of a local tourist attraction by a third group. And most of the people who went were pretty normal and just having fun. Not too surprising.

Even the Pepe the Frog characters were just a couple of Latino guys from California who seemed to have no idea it's associated in any way with alt-right stuff.

It seems the people guarding Area 51 were mostly having fun, too.
Quote:
At the end of the road was a drab military checkpoint flanked by concertina wire and threatening signs. The sign prohibiting photography was clearly a dead letter.

Rotating shifts of law enforcement officers of every variety – sheriff’s deputies, state troopers, game wardens, park rangers – kept a watchful eye on everything. They seemed relaxed, though, and looked like they were having as good a time as the ostensible Stormers. After all, this was an excuse for them to hang out at Area 51, too.

A Florida high school was evacuated Thursday after “bong” was misheard as “bomb.”

A family member of a student at Marianna High School called a staff member and said the student had a “bong” in their backpack, School Superintendent H. Larry Moore said in an online statement.

The staff member on the other line heard “bomb,” prompting them to report the situation to administrators for “appropriate action” to be taken, Moore said....

A similar incident happened at a Massachusetts high school in May 2018, when police officers searched the school thinking a student had reported a bomb in the parking lot, CBS Boston reported...

Are a significant percentage of AM radio show guests and callers just nuts?

Fox News is parting ways with radio host Todd Starnes, who made headlines following a controversial segment on his show earlier this week.

...The radio host made headlines on Monday when a guest on his program claimed that Democrats do not believe in the Christian God and instead may worship Moloch, a pagan god synonymous with child sacrifice.

That sounds like the sort of nuttiness that wouldn't be out of place at my old church.

The really scary thing is that there was a time in my life when I would have found that completely reasonable. :Q

Surgical objects being left inside more patients in Canada
Quote:
More than 550 objects have been unintentionally left in Canadian medical and surgery patients between 2016 and 2018, and the problem appears to be getting worse.

A new report released Thursday by the Canadian Institute for Health Information says 553 sponges, medical instruments and other objects were left in patients over that period.
Quote:
"Some surgeries are long and complicated and if they have to change people during that surgery because some surgeries last a long time, it may be that things get missed because of that. It may be that they don't have protocols in place — surgical checklists are one of the things that are utilized to try and prevent a number of things happening.

"What we know is patient safety is complicated. People don't go to work to make mistakes but these things happen."

Johnson said several peer countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, do not report on cases where foreign objects are left behind, making comparisons difficult.
How is this level of carelessness even possible???

I could see how a sponge soaked with blood could be missed. The inside of the body is a crowded place, with organs layered on top of each other, intestines slipping around, tissues that want to slip back into place after they've been pushed aside, etc. :) And sometimes things have to move fast and there are more important things to think about, right then, than where's that sponge gotten to. Also, they use some very small openings with some of the surgeries they're doing these days. That's what the checklists are for - they're supposed to count the number of the sponges and instruments at the start and the end of the procedure, to keep one from being left behind. Could be communication issues when teams are changed, among other things.

Basically, people are human and make mistakes, and the busier and more tired they are, the more likely that is.

I'd be willing to bet that Canada isn't an outlier and there are just as many cases in the U.S.
