They do sound like aphids, but I have no idea beyond that.

Yeah, aphids can be a big problem on blackcurrants. You could try regular spraying with soapy water if you don't want to use an insecticide. As to no fruit, the plants produce fruit on the previous year's growth, so I hope you haven't pruned the old wood out too soon?

I don't think I've overpruned it. In the spring it was full of yellow blossoms, so I assumed that each of them would develop into a clump of berries. The blossoms are gone, and there are only a couple of unripe berries on the whole plant.

I've been giving it a good spraying with soapy water once a day since I noticed the little green bugs. I doubt if I'm getting the whole thing in one session, since there are so many branches. It's probably too late for this year, but I'll make a point of starting a daily spraying next spring as soon as the leaves appear.

Sounds like you're doing the right things. I just saw this quick-tip video on Gardeners' World...she says it may be down to frost?

Well, that's possible. I guess I'll try to get my hands on some horticultural fleece to cover it, just in case.

I spray and spray it with soapy water every day. But since this year's harvest is probably a lost cause, should I just let nature run its course for the rest of year, and restart treatment early next spring?

I'm no expert, really! If you've got currant blister aphids the article I just found says they return in the Autumn to lay their eggs... :uhoh:

Here's another article that mentions the different types of aphids you might have on blackcurrants:

What's the best time to transplant a bush? Now, or wait until the spring?

From Jenn: Now is fine, but you'll need to water it very well before you move it and then again once you replant it.

So now that all the leaves are fallen from my blackcurrant bush, I discovered one single solitary berry had survived the infestation.

One.

And it was delicious.

We got three strawberries yesterday. And lots of persimmons.

This blackcurrant was actually the sum total of my blackcurrant harvest this year. Next year I need to start spraying with soapy water as soon as the blossoms come out.

I hope you had better luck with your strawberries and persimmons!

We share strawberries fairly with the slugs. Usually, squirrels and birds get to the persimmons before we do, but this year we got so many that we get some, too.

I see green buds just beginning to form on the blackcurrant bush, so I'm spraying with soapy water every day from now on.

Wanna take bets on whether I actually get a blackcurrant harvest this year?

I hope so! We were going to plant some trees this spring, and then we remembered that the 17-year cicadas are coming. :( So we'll need to wait until fall.

Can you grow apricots where you live?

I've never heard of anyone having apricot trees here, but I don't know for sure.

The buds are starting to open. If every one of them turns into a berry, I'll easily have enough to make jam this year, with some left over.

If....

Fingers crossed, Jude!

I took Lisa to the tulip festival at Arundel Castle, which is around 7 miles from us, today. The festival officially opened from 6th April yet there were many bulbs still to flower. Another week and it should be even more fabulous if it warms up. Weather today started out sunny but all too soon it became overcast above us and decidedly chilly. Didn't let it spoil our enjoyment, though. Here's a link to the photos for those not on FB. Hope it works!
