I have cousins in the Bedford area whom my mum is in touch with. I'll have to ask if she's heard from them.

I think only a few inches Jude. Still more than they're used to obviously.

I've been reading that things in Texas are worse than I originally thought. Are your co-workers still doing all right?

There was a big ice storm that hit Mississippi during the winter of 88/89 when I lived there that must have been comparable in a lot of ways to the one that just hit Texas. Certainly both areas were wholly unprepared for severe winter weather. I was just a kid at the time and would have been oblivious to a lot of the consequences, but I know much of my city was without power for at least a week. We spent most of our time huddled together in the family room under lots of blankets and reading by candlelight, as I recall. Food was eaten cold or cooked in the fireplace, which is also where we boiled our drinking water. But I don't remember the whole thing being anything worse than a temporary inconvenience that everyone promptly moved on from once it was over. I wonder what's making this Texas storm so much worse?

Edit: This looks like the storm I'm remembering. It was also in February:

Yikes.

Yeah, it's pretty bad there. My friend posted that they just got back power today, but they have no water due to busted pipes. (Do they not know to leave them running? Does that stop being effective at some point?)

They're doing ok, but I guess Austin is probably better catered for than rural Texas. My boss was without water or power for three days but he got power back yesterday.

I would guess that many do not. It certainly stops being effective at *some* point, but that point has gotta be quite a bit lower than 20 degrees (it did get colder than 20 in parts of Texas, but I don't know for how long).

I'm a bit mystified too by reports of entire houses being flooded due to burst pipes *in the attic*. Why are there water pipes in attics? Solar water heaters?

We have a water tank in our attic. I thought that was pretty common?

It's not something I've ever encountered, but I suppose that would make sense as a way to keep sinks supplied from the tank if the municipal system loses pressure.

My daughter has an outdoor faucet that is leaking a constant dribble, and it still hadn't frozen completely in the recent VERY cold weather. -11 F / -24 C

They just moved in last October and haven't had a chance to fix all the things that are wrong with the place yet. It's a freeze proof faucet, and the working parts are far underground, so it isn't easy to get to.

Finally heard back from cousins - seems they coped ok, only one of them had to move into a hotel for a couple of days. The cousin who wrote back was well prepared - they heeded warnings and stocked up on groceries, turned water off at the metre and opened the water lines every 3-4 hours to prevent freezing.

Here's a quick quote, referencing the political fallout:
Quote:
As you saw, last week was terrible, here. We're usually concerned with how hot it gets in the summer, not how cold in the winter! Big problem was the natural gas. Most of our generators are powered by it. When it got so cold, everyone with gas, cranked up their heat. The generators couldn't get enough gas to run...they started to shut down. Then things "snowballed," no pun intended. After awhile, they grid had lost 30-40% of generating power with record cold temperatures... below 0 degrees F, think that's about -20C. Roads were iced over, almost impossible to drive anywhere. As a result, the stores ran out of groceries & gas stations out of gasoline. All back to normal, at this time. A lot of "finger-pointing" among politicians right now.The last time we had a cold snap. similar, was 2001. They had some of the same issues, but not on this scale. Legislature passed a bill "recommending" power companies winterize their generators. No teeth to it, so nothing done. This was much worse. Governor is demanding legislation to require winterization + other changes.

I'm sure they'll learn nothing from this. (I'm glad your cousins are okay.)

Apparently some people think the snow is fake and sent by the Democrats as a punishment for not voting for Biden.

God help us all.

It sure didn't seem fake this past week when I was shoveling it. [ img ][ img ]

Robins are the traditional North American avian harbingers of spring, but some individuals are non-migratory, so not really the best choice. A better one is when the Cardinals decide to start singing again, and that moment has arrived in southern Michigan. I thought I heard my first one of 2021 yesterday afternoon, but this morning there's no doubt about it. Next thing to watch for are Red-winged Blackbirds and Grackles.

Can... can Democrats *do* that? I thought their only superpower was losing with a majority.

Well, if so, they punished Ohio, too (understandably so given the whole white militia nonsense).

I have not heard my cardinals sing yet. And I lost my cool parking area at the hospital by the pond where the red-winged blackbirds hang out. Hopefully, I'll still be able to hear them before and after work. Grackles will just be wherever. Lol. (I like them, though I know some people don't.)

We had a couple days in the 70s already. Which I'm sure sounds lovely to the snowbound folks, but is an ominous sign for our fire season this year.
