Semi-colons are great! Actually, I'm a lover of the various punctuation marks because I enjoy the subtlety that is possible but I do think that mis-use causes confusion as much as under-use. Sometimes I think the hard and fast rules don't work and ommission (particularly of commas), even when technically called for, clarifies meaning or expression better. But I'm a bit of a maverick in the way I use punctuation - I enjoy dashes, too; and ellipses :D

Vinnie, you sound like a dangerous legal maverick! :D A lawyer using commas and semi-colons! Unheard of. ;)

Eru, there's nothing to it; a little common sense mixed in with some rule-learning…and a little fanaticism. ;)

Might stop my whispering in the corners now :P

I like the German rules for this:

All we talk about here is sex, alcohol and religion.

All we talk about here is sex, alcohol, and we also talk about religion.

Nice, ain't it? :D

That's what I said! :D

But your sentence would also have to have a comma before the "and" by German rules! :P

Truehobbit, you should have my job.

Even if it's easier to interest students when talking about sex and alcohol and rather not about religion.

The clarity of rules in the German language is one of its best attributes. It's a very logical language... even if the verb is at the end of the sentence! ;) (And some of those nouns get awfully long... but they are VERY precise!)

I  German...

Thanks, I'll take it! :P :D

Anthy, long nouns? Whatever do you mean?

Something like:
Messageboardadministrationsordnung? (Which we could call our Charter)

Beziehungsförderungsgemeinschaft? (Something that would describe this board, esp in the couples-threads)

Seelengeschädigtenunterstützungsorganisation? (Another apt description for us, esp in the thread about more traumatic experiences.)

:P :D

Babelfish was able to figure those out? :Q

("under" in the last one is superfluous, but apart from that they are ok.)

I'm sorry to be using this thread for personal help, but I've been trying to change my sig pic for about two weeks now, copying photos off the net, scanning them into jpg files and then trying to upload them from my computer. Whatever the size limit says, it is actually less than 10K because even when I miniaturize my jpgs and reduce them to 300 dpi, and the file reads 9K, the phpbber program will not accept them.

I found a picture in an imdb photo gallery, and when I click on it I do get url navigation into in my nav bar, and that info changes for each pic, but I'm not sure if the url gives my only the pic or the whole imdb page it's embedded in, ads and all.

And in the profile, is that a link? or a url to elsewhere? I couldn't figure out what is the different between those two choices. If it's a url it's a link, right? But there's something called 'hot links', too, which we don't want on the board, right? So it matters what I key into that space? Or not ...

Eru loaded my pic from a photogallery that Liddy had put up and I am totally clueless at this point.

Jny, are you talking about a sig pic, or do you mean your avatar?

Most of us host our sig pics in our own albums in http://www.photobucket.com, and image-link to them (that's one form of hotlinking, and Photobucket allows it) in the signature box; whereas the avvies can be uploaded to the site.

And, for example, my current avatar is 14 K, and I didn't have any problems with uploading it.

Jny, that's actually what the thread is for - not discussion of German grammar, fascinating though that may be! ;)

Yes, you shouldn't link directly to a website, but store the pic on an online album and link with the image tag.

But, yes, your sig is different from your avatar! It's still not quite clear which one you mean!
(Looking at my pics: the avatar is the one of me in the garden, the sig is the welcome pic.)

Your avatar can be uploaded from your harddisk, I've never used a link there, but I looked it up and it should be possible.

If you send me the pic or a link, I can try putting it in the space you want it! :)

Yup, I asked that question before but you never answered me Jn: are you wanting to change your avatar (the pic under your name) or add a sig pic? It sounds like you're wanting to change your avatar. We should have a 20K limit now. truehobbit is right, you should load your avatar from your hard drive. What ever pic you're wanting, save it to your computer. If you need any resizing help, I would be more than willing to help you out since I have the software to do it. That's what I did with your pic that you used to have. I saved the picture from Steve's photo album, cropped it, resized it, and the uploaded it from my computer.

Ah - Eru, I just came here after seeing your PM. Sorry, but that question was up for a while and no one answered. I haven't been online much today and just say your two posts and Hobby's.

It is my avatar that I want to change. I don't want my picture there now that we are open. But I have no photo capabilities on my computer at all.

Eru, you did this for me once before so I'll ask you again (also, it's the middle of the night in Germany now). I've got a link to imdb which will probably have to be resized. Here's the link, and if it turns out to be too complicated, or can't be downloaded or something, just let me know.

http://www.imdb.com/gallery/mptv/1359/1 ... 074&seq=10

I don't rank very high on the geek-o-meter. :P

Well that one was weird. I tried saving the image to my comp, but it didn't save anything. :scratch I had to get a screen capture of it and then do all the cropping and resizing.

Anyway, here it is:

[ img ]

You can save that to your comp and then upload it or upload it from that url. It should work. It's only 11K.

Voronwe,

Would you be so kind?

(I just sent Eru a PM to thank her.)

I don't know how to save a picture from Eru's post to my computer ... which makes the pic something of an oxymoron, doesn't it?

:LMAO:

Or maybe I'm not stupid and just don't have the right programs for doing this kind of thing. I have a scanner and can create jpg's but I think that is what makes the files so large. I have nothing that can read a photo.

EXCELLENT.

:Wooper:

That's one way to chop 30 years off my age!

and three inches off my waist

I am happy to report, however, that after two children I am able to compete in the boob and hip arena :P and, of course, in the contest of tricks with a magic lasso. :D

Thank you Eru  and Voronwe

Jny, to save a pic from her to you PC, right-click on it, select "save image" - and that's it.

To resize pics, and reduce their kb size, download IrfanView - it's free and really, really easy to use!
