I should note that there was never much doubt about which scene was going to come out on top. The lowest rating for the Ride of the Rohirrim was 8, and that was the only one that ranked it less then 9, and it received 28 10s, the most of any (it should be noted that Arwen's Fate, which finished all the way down at 14, received 24 10s, the fourth most 10s after the Ride and the Departure of Boromir, and the End of All Things, the top three scenes).

Okay folks, you can blame Iavas for this. As he pointed out, the only real way to rank the different scenes in the films as to have everyone rank each scene on a scale of 1 to 10. But which scenes should be ranked? The top 5 in the poll I did at TORC? The top 10? 20? 25? 50? 100? And then there is the problem that we ran into with defining what exactly was a scene, and at what point each scene began and ended.

Well, in my usually impossible maverick fasion, I decided to take a different approach. This isn't the TORC poll, or a continuation therein. This is a whole new ball of wax, now that we have the whole film. I think that the only reasonable solution is that we rank every scene from the films. And I think we should define scenes as they are defined on the Extended Edition DVDs. That way there is no question whatsoever about what each scene is, where it begins, or where it ends. (For those who do not own the DVD's do not despair! Those of us who do will be happy to describe what each scene consists of. )

Here is the way it works.

The poll begins right now. You can paste a ballot here in this thread, and edit it to your hearts content until the poll ends. Or you can PM me your ballot, or email it to me at sador_labadal@yahoo.com. However, if you PM or email it will be more difficult for you to get changes made to it. The poll is open to anyone to participate, board77 members or not. Please encourage your friends at TORN, and CoE and TheOneRing.Com and anyone else to come vote. The more people we have, the more meaningful it will be. But please do not try to vote more then once, either by posting here and then also emailing me, or by using different email addresses.

You can rank as many or as few of the different scenes as you wish, from one to all of them. Obviously, I would prefer that everyone rank all the scenes to get the best possible sample sizes, but I realize that that is unrealistic. I recognize that the level of familiarity with the films varies greatly, and I don't want to limit participation to only people who are big fans of the films or very familiar with them. Some people may have strong postive or negative feelings about some of the different scenes but not really have much opinion about others. I still want those people to be able to participate. If you don't want to rank a particular scene, just leave it blank, or put NR (not ranked) and I just won't count it in determining that scenes overall average ranking. If a scene is not listed on at least half of the ballots submitted, I won't count it at all.

Rank each scene that you rank on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest possible ranking. Each person will have to set their own standards for how to rank the scenes. This is a completely subjective exercise folks; you'll get no objective standards from a transcendentalist like me.

The poll will remain open until two days before we finally have our big opening celebration, which I am hoping is not going to be until Mossy gets back in the middle of August [edit: the poll will remain open until August 17]. If the celebration gets set too soon (like in a week, as some as spoken of), the poll will have to go longer then that. In that case, I'll leave it up for a month, and then decide when to announce the results.

At the end of the poll I will calculate the average ranking for each scene and when they are announced, I'll post them by each film (for Sassy's sake ) as well as probably listing the top overall 20 in order.

Hmmm...don't know if I'll have time to do this but if I do...I am currently TV-and-DVD-player-less, a problem I hope to remedy in the next couple of weeks...I think I'll sit down and rewatch the movies with a pen n paper an my DVD remote to tell when a scene starts and ends exactly.

If I actually do this completely, I think it puts my insanity ranking at about...oh...I'd say, a 9.7.

Whaddya think? Should the ranking be based on how good the scene is compared to other LOTR scenes or compared to other movie scenes in general? For example, the Green Dragon might be an average LOTR scene earning it a 5, but I enjoy it more than your average movie scene earning it perhaps a 7. Which score should I go with for this poll?

Yov, score it however you want to. If YOU think the scene is a 7, based on your reaction to it as a LOTR fan or a movie buff or whatever else, it should be a 7. But try to rate all of the scenes that you rate using the same basic standards.

I am going to judge them against other movies - that is ultimately where PJs film lives or dies. At the same time, the scenes that capture something truly special about the book are the ones most likely to excel against other movies.

Talking of the Green Dragon highlights a possible problem though, with regard to the Green Dragon scene in ROTK. From the chapter listing, it seems this scene is part of a much longer chapter (Homeward Bound). Homeward Bound consists of several small scenes strung together. So do we rate it based on our favourite scene in the chapter, or take an average? It seems something of a shame that we won't get to rate something like The Green Dragon in ROTK as a standalone scene..

Iavas, I would say a weighted average. If the Green Dragon part of the Homeward Bound scene has particular importance, there is no reason why it can't be given more significance in your scoring then other parts of the scene. Still, the idea is to rate the full scene. For instance, I agree with Faramond that the skull avalanche should get a zero, but there are other parts of the Paths of the Dead scene that I like. I probably won't give that scene more then a 3 overall even though I do like some of it, because what I don't like, I really don't like.
