Just saw this movie last night. It's the one with Jim Calsiviel and Guy Pearce. I enjoyed the movie, and it's described as being very true to the book, but I'm sure the ending was wrong.

I saw the Richard Chamberlain version when I was a kid, but I don't remember much and I've never read the book. I did a musical version a few years back and I'm sure the ending was different.

So, can someone tell me if the film ending and the book ending were the same?

In the film, Dantes, Mercedes and Albert all survive. Villefort goes to jail and Fernand is killed (by Dantes).

I suppose I should really just read the book...

Alatar,

I have not seen the film, but I heard that this adaptation of Monte Cristo was extremely different from the book (just like any other adaptation of MC). As for the ending, I do not like spoiling endings, so I will not reveal the ending of the book to you. In other words, your supposition is correct: you should read the book, which is fabulous and is an easy read.

I really enjoyed the movie (Richard Harris was great too), so I did a bit of research as well. The movie IS very different from the book. I got far enough into the research to discover that, and have put it off. Someday I will read the book and discover it all, but hopefully I will still enjoy both :)

I think I'll go with my first gut reaction and read the book. :)

My first love is the book! :D

But I did like this movie version. I would agree that it's worth reading the book though... Very much worth your time!

Saw the movie first, read the book After that. Loved the movie, loved the book even more. :D They cut out a lot. It has the same basic plot, of course, but a happier ending...which they did change from the book.

me with the joy of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime of
something far more deeply interfused, whose dwelling is the
light of setting suns, and the round ocean and the living air,
and the blue sky, and in the mind of man; a motion and a
spirit, that impels." -Wordsworth

In the book version the elf never thinks of leaving Middle Earth.

No, wait...
