I made Vison's list!!
I don't have a top 10 list of reasons, but I do have an observation:
Most of us here are of various "rare" personality types, according to the MBTI spectrum. It is difficult to find and meet others in RL with whom we are compatable, because we really are
rare. We are vastly outnumbered by the Guardians and Artisan temperments, with whom it is not so easy to communicate.
Therefore, when we find a high concentration of people who think more or less like we do, and like communicating in written form like this, it's just overwhelming. People "get" us, possibly for the first time for some of us. It allows a new level of personal growth that was not possible before.
That's why this place is so addictive. There are plenty of people just as weird as we know ourselves to be, and its OKAY! That's the good part. I can tell you guys about all sorts of weird metaphysical stuff that I'm discovering, and nobody tells me I'm being foolish or wasting my time. (Or at least not often!) Those that are interested, comment. Those that aren't, don't. Either way, I'm not alienating people with my weird ideas, because most everyone here LIKES weird ideas. It doesn't offend your sense of reality or propriety to read off the wall theorizing about the nature of reality.
And that sort of easy intellectual acceptance is the sort of thing I've rarely encountered in real life. Artisans are too wrapped up in creating physical things, and Guardians are too interested in maintaining the status quo to be interested in mental gymnastics.
It's the high concentration of Rationals and Idealists on this site that draws me, even though that same high concentration of Rationalists and Idealists is what causes our frequent board meltdowns.
Idealists hold to an ideal no matter what. Rationalists hold the to Logic, no matter what, and there is little room for compromise in between. That's what causes the clashes, but it's also what makes the other conversations so interesting.
If we were a population with the normal distribution of Artisans, Guardians, Idealists and Rationalists- we'd have about 80% Artisans and Guardians, and the remaining rares would have only their small nooks and corners to have conversations in. The huge bulk of Artisan and Guardian conversation would mellow out any tendancy towards board meltdown, from the sheer dilution factor.
Perhaps that's why we are, as we are. The very thing that draws us together, tips us towards the tendancy towards meltdown.
*sigh*
