Are you getting all those notices on the page about their data center being screwy? It's been like that for several days now. For me at least. They were still scrobbling everything but now they don't even list how many tracks a person has played since joining. And apparently some functions like trying to add a gig are down.

I'm seeing Jeff Martin, formerly of The Tea Party.

It was goofy for me for about a day, but it seems to have straightened itself out.

I haven't noticed any problems with it, but I don't actually visit the site much.

I'm on it every couple of hours tbh. Usually to make sure things are tagged right when I'm adding new albums to itunes. I waste so much time on that  but can't really stop myself.

EDIT: omg it's so beautiful....... http://www.last.fm/event/598058 :D

Also, last.fm added almost a thousand extra songs to my profile. I kept track of how much I played while the site was glitchy so I know the number's wrong but wow that is a lot to be off by lol. Or maybe they finally just caught up on songs they hadn't counted in the past. I could believe it. :x haha

iPods are wonderful, aren't they? I hardly ever leave the house without my Shuffle, Eric. (Yes he has a name don't make fun of me.)

If I tried to compile a top 10 list for the year I would probably not be able to do it.

But, I'll list the new artists I've finally admitted I like since August.

My Chemical Romance (I still feel dirty when I admit it)
Good Charlotte
Bandits Of The Acoustic Revolution (Amazing band, amazing lyrics, not that many songs :( )
Saving Abel
Guns 'N Roses (Because of Chinese Democracy. )
Adema (Actually I've liked this band for a while but I'm just now getting around to owning their music)

And I guess I could do a "Songs of December" list or something.
Lesse...

Yule Shoot Your Eye Out - Fall Out Boy
I Won't Be Home For Christmas - Blink 182
Sing for Absolution - Muse
Better - Guns 'N Roses
Christmas Song - Weezer
New Tattoo - Saving Abel

That's not at all complete though.

Yay for the iPod! I love mine!!!

I'm considering buying a few Muse singles after listening to them from the Random Thread. I like Daughtry's songs as well, so I may have to get a few of those. I am also trying to think of 15 great songs I just want. (I got a $15 GC.) I do not know yet what those 15 songs will be, but I'm thinking.

I just wanted last.fm to be mobile. :bawl: It mostly works lol. Still playing around with it. Songs keep showing up twice on my library but when I delete one of them, both disappear. Very annoying, but at least got the basics down. Like being able to scrobble things from bed! Or without taking a bathroom break! It's not live scrobbling but it'll do.

Hey, itunes asks if you wanna name the ipod when it first syncs, so I see no problem with complying. ;) Mine is called Murray. It just popped into my head but I guess fits with Ghostbusters being on tv a lot lately heh.

How comes? Make it a top 20 or 50 then. Or 3, if you gotta. :P

Add things as you think of them! I still intend to write my lists from 2007, dammit. Well, technically I did last year, but I mean to expand on that and post here. Anyway, will have a think about '08 first. Only three albums come to mind, as I just grabbed things by genre and not whether they were new releases or not.

Whoa. Just noticed your signature, Dawn. That song is amazing. I skipped it a lot this year, probs so I wouldn't get sick of it, but it's still in my top 40 on itunes. I would love if folks could suggest songs that build up like that. They don't necessarily have to be of epic length, but they usually take their time to get where they're going and hold you in rapt attention the whole way. I started a playlist but didn't have much to add. For those interested:
  • Garbage - Happy Home
Hans Zimmer - Journey To the Line (from the Thin Red Line score)
    Sigur Ros - Glosoli
    Joanna Newsom - Emily
Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
    Live - Lightning Crashes
Halp. :D

Lali, if I may! I love Muse and though I've whittled down my collection to about 30 favorites, these are probably a good place to start and except for "Bliss", tend to be fan favorites as well.
  • Starlight
    Time Is Running Out
    Bliss
    Hysteria
    Supermassive Black Hole
    Butterflies and Hurricanes
    Knights of Cydonia
    Take A Bow
Wait a minute, "Take A Bow" totally builds up. Add that to my other list. :D I don't care for their earlier albums, but Absolution is the best, then Black Holes & Revelations.

Daughtry's album is really good. I am sick of "Home" and the general pimp treatment he got on American Idol over contestants I liked more, ;) but there are three or four killer tracks, so good on him. Hope the next album is a thumbs up as well. If you'd like some extra songs, let me know. The "A" material is all on the album, but I have a few demos, acoustic performances, and stuff from Chris' high school band. Someone else may as well enjoy them cuz I'll probs delete them soon.

Like I'm going anywhere.

Easy list for now: albums I bought this year. I gotta get to Listography or something, since CD Tracker shut down. This writing on paper thing is freaking me out!
  • A Fine Frenzy - One Cell In the Sea
Basia Bulat - Oh, My Darling
    Christina Aguilera - Stripped
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood To the Head
    David Archuletta - self-titled
    Fergie - The Dutchess
Go West - Aces and Kings: The Best of Go West
James Morrison - Songs For You, Truths For Me
Jeff Martin - Exile and the Kingdom
    Kutless - Strong Tower
    Lady GaGa - The Fame
    Madonna - The Immaculate Collection
Meg & Dia - Something Real
    M.I.A. - Kala
Paramore - All We Know Is Falling
    P!nk - Try This
    Robyn - self-titled
Shiny Toy Guns - Season of Poison
    Snow Patrol - Eyes Open
    Sweeney Todd soundtrack
The Click Five - Modern Minds and Pastimes
    Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
    Within Temptation - Mother Earth
Not counting the dozen or so I bought on eBay this week. :blackeye:

On that note, I was put in an awkward position when the local record store closed. :bawl: <-- Not joking, I shed tears over that. I love this town, but holy frig it sucks sometimes. We were already dying before this recent economy trouble, but closing the paper mill and adding a Walmart can't be much help. It's crazy how many stores have left the mall to build nearer to Walmart. By the by, Walmart is on the other side of the mall parking lot. :suspicious: Twats. I totally feel like running around highways and icy sidewalks just to see what's at the bloody dollar store when I could have viewed it from INSIDE A HEATED MALL.

Anyway, I can't believe I now live in a town with no record store. That just seems so wrong to me. Sure, there is Zellers and Walmart, but that's such a small collection of best-sellers and bargain bin crap that I don't really count it. Music is an after-thought in those kinda places. The CD Plus that we had was run by the same guy for 14 years and he knew everything about music. If they didn't have something, they ordered it for you. And they had a lot. I am not trashing the big hits, cuz obviously I buy a good share of those too. But it's so lovely to browse the racks and be like, "... omg Sigur Ros! Gogol Bordello! Leaves' Eyes!" and know that they don't shy away from foreign artists, non-English lyrics, or genres that aren't pop and rap. End of an era, this is. *flies flag at half-mast*

Another problem for me is that now I can only buy records on the rare trip outside of town. Or online. Part of the appeal of record stores is supporting local businesses, but also the limitations, as weird as that may sound. I like having eBay and such as a backup for those really hard-to-find albums, but when you have the whole internet at your fingertips, where the heck does it stop? For someone like me, it doesn't. :P I made the smart decision to write up a list of albums to purchase, putting the most important ones at the top and basing it all on how many stars I give them on itunes, and how high they rank on last.fm. That way, no impulse shopping. I know exactly which artists I owe an album purchase to, and which ones I'm not in a rush to get or pay much for (helloooo $10 oldies!). Anal as hell, but, um, probably necessary.

And yes, I prefer jewel cases to computer files. They look prettier in my room. ;) I do still love and use GoMusic.ru though! Hard to beat 15 cents a song.

I approve of this. Man, I waited forever to get an album from him. For those that don't know, he used to go by the name of Brad Kane, and did the singing voice of Aladdin in the Disney flick. Then he changed his first name to his middle name and put together some really bitchin' EPs that his label didn't want to release for some idiotic reason. I was so desperate to be there when his stuff was finally available (as opposed to snagged from a file-sharing program) that I signed petitions and wrote e-mails to the label and argh, he's just amazing ok. Anyway, found out only this week that he had a full-length album released in the friggin' summer and is now called Brad Caleb Kane. It's really awesome to know that, but also frustrating cuz I was waiting for at least three years. Thanks for telling me and all, official newsletter people! Needless to say, the album is now en route to Chez *E*. I can't wait to hear the new material on it, and if the arrangements on the rest have been changed at all. :w00t:

Is that a cover of the Kelly Clarkson song?

"Eye" by the Pumpkins (technically just Billy Corgan, but it's always been attributed to the whole band) has been a favorite of mine for years. The Lost Highway soundtrack is such an odd duck of song selections but even back then, I still enjoyed it. Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson were very different for me at the time, so it was a gamble that luckily paid off. Still never seen the film. :P

I love the end of the year...great time to find new music off all the best-of lists without doing the work of wading though 3000 albums yourself! :D

My fav albums of the year:

Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree
Kat Flint - Dirty Birds
St. Vincent - Marry Me
My Brightest Diamond - 1000 Shark's Teeth
Ingrid Michaelson - Girls and Boys
Iron and Wine - The Shepherd's Dog

(okay so only half of these were actually released this year, but I did most of my listening to all of them this year, so.)

New stuff from this year that I've just found now but is really awesome:

Shearwater - Rooks
Amanda Palmer - Who Killed Amanda Palmer
Chairlift - Does You Inspire You
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Flight
Headlights - Some Racing, Some Stopping

Where's yov? He'll actually recognize most of this stuff...:D

Oh, *E*, heck no. :LMAO:

Well, actually, I've never heard that Kelly Clarkson song. Let me check.

Okay, definitely not. Jon McLaughlin's song is about a girl, for one, and much better. :LMAO:

Elian sighting! And in a music thread!!!

I've tried an album or two by My Brightest Diamond but it just wasn't for me. Bit dull. Her cover of Radiohead's "Lucky" is excellent, though.

Funny story with Iron & Wine: I first tried out Amy Winehouse because her Back In Black album was being advertised all over last.fm at the same time yov was listening to Iron & Wine. I meant to download the latter, but since I wasn't familiar with either artist and just remembered the "wine" part, it was the former I ended up with. :P Fortunately, it turned out to be a great album, and I've since come to enjoy Iron & Wine as well. No more silly mistakes with those two at least lol. Still gotta try the shepherd album, though. I've played Our Endlessly Numbered Days ("Sodom, South Georgia" is so, sooo good). Might have mentioned this before, but I find Ray LaMontagne to be in a similar vein, with the delicate vocals and country leanings. Check out his Trouble album if you're interested. :poke:

Not to sound pushy with the recommendations, but I really have to jump at this one opportunity since you mentioned Amanda Palmer. Even though I already knew you liked the Dresden Dolls. (Still working on her solo album and think it's alright!) Anyway, I don't know if you'd like Emilie Autumn overall, but someone compared her voice to Palmer because it's cabaret or something and I can definitely see it now. Same with Rasputina, which are listed as similar artists on last.fm. Emilie is pretty versatile, so some of her stuff will appeal more than others, but I am a huge fan so gotta sing the praises in general. To hear her voice, the songs "Shalott", "Epilogue: What If", and "Prologue: Across the Sky" are great. For the more classical sound, her violin work in "Willow" is gorgeous. And my personal favorite is "Face the Wall". I'm bolding that mofo because it is so unbelievably freakin' amazing, I...... I am starting a new paragraph for it, that's what.

People, you have no idea. I totally accept that everyone has their own tastes, but if you don't think "Face the Wall" is pretty bad-ass, I just have to wonder about you, no offense. The first time I heard it, it just seemed like noise, initially. After a couple of minutes, I thought, "hm... usually I skip over stuff like this but I think I've been converted to a fan of the guitar solo!" Then I remembered: she's not a guitarist. She plays the violin. I was hearing an electric violin. Not saying she invented it, but I'd never heard anything like it before and was gobsmacked. The actual tune is incredible, though, not just the instrument playing it. Together, they definitely put my jaw on the floor. Have my own little routine now when it comes on itunes: it sounds best on the headphones, where it feels like the music is drilling into my brain, but if I have the speakers on I just make sure they're up very very loud. ;) It just seems wrong to play without hurting my ears. Need a few minutes of recovery afterwards but it's worth it haha.

For those who do end up trying it out, maybe other things come to mind while listening, but it always made me think of the lifespan of some mad musician. Perhaps like Mozart, or at least how the trailers for Amadeus look. :P The song starts off with seemingly aimless noise, which you could think of as birth. Then gets this exciting feel to it, like someone's just discovered a passion, and as they get better and more obsessed with it, the song speeds up. We kind of float through personal triumphs and the ascension of a star, but then the trouble starts. Just suggestions at first, but then more serious, and eventually overpowering. His personal life starts to fall apart, and work suffers. Then something awful happens, maybe the death of a child. You can hear the violin cry out like it's in agony. Soon enough, he completely loses it and all hell breaks loose. But either he can't keep living like that or someone else won't let him, because there's a half-hearted attempt to get back on track before it's quickly cut off. And that's it. You're left to just sit and think about what you've heard, possibly to go back and play it again for answers that aren't really there. ;)

I am comfortable in calling it the best song I've ever heard.

I like it but...I'm going to tell myself it's an electric guitar because I'm too much of a violin purist for my ears to accept that it's a violin of any kind. :LMAO:

*adds it to the download list*
